Questions from the JLPT Dec 2013 past paper

    Show answer

    Answer: 3.

Option 3 is correct. The passage states: 「どちらも、未来をイメージする=想像することのうちにあるのだ」('Both are within the act of imagining = 想像 about the future'). The author defines 想像 as a combination of 空想 (fantasy) and 予測 (prediction), so both together constitute (構成する) the image of the future. Option 3 captures this precisely.

    • 1Option 1 is wrong because only 予測 is described as being on '現実の延長線上' (an extension of reality). 空想 is described as '幻想的な意味での夢見る世界' (a dreamlike world in a fantastical sense), which is not on the extension of reality.
    • 2Option 2 is wrong because only 空想 is described as dream-like with low probability ('可能性が希薄でも許される'). 予測 is explicitly based on '確度の高いデータ' (high-certainty data), so it is not a low-probability dream.
    • 4Option 4 is wrong because the passage never says either 空想 or 予測 'realizes' (現実化させる) the future image. They are components of imagination, not tools for making things real.
    • 空想くうそう — fantasy, daydream — fanciful imagination not bound by reality
    • 予測よそく — prediction, forecast — based on reliable data
    • 構成こうせいする — to constitute, to make up, to compose
    • 希薄きはく — thin, weak — here meaning low (probability)
    • 確度かくど — degree of certainty, reliability

    Show answer

    Answer: 3.

Option 3 is correct. The passage states two key points: (1) 「僕が『想像』したことをもとに作品を『創造』する」('creating works based on what I imagined'), and (2) 「『創造』するためには、そこに『何のために』という強い動機が必要なのだ」('to create, a strong motive of "for what purpose" is necessary'). Option 3 combines both: creating works based on 想像 with a purpose (目的) for drawing. This is exactly what 創造 means to the author.

    • 1Option 1 is wrong because it says '想像もしていなかったような作品を作る' (making works that one hadn't even imagined). This contradicts the passage, which explicitly says creation is based on what was imagined: 「『想像』したことをもとに作品を『創造』する」.
    • 2Option 2 is wrong because it describes the process of 空想 (dreaming up a dreamlike world while making works), not the essence of 創造. The passage distinguishes 想像 (which includes 空想) from 創造, and the defining feature of 創造 is having a strong motive/purpose, not the act of dreaming.
    • 4Option 4 is wrong because it shifts the focus to 'making works that can imagine the future' (未来を想像できる作品を作る), which is not what the passage says. Also, the author says he 'あまり意識してこなかった' (hadn't been very conscious of) the question of purpose, whereas option 4 says to consciously do so. The passage's point is that creation = imagination + purpose, not creating works about future imagination.
    • 創造そうぞう — creation — here, producing works (作品) based on imagination
    • もとに — based on, on the basis of (〜をもとに: based on ~)

    Show answer

    Answer: 2.

Option 2 is correct. ('By creating works based on what I imagined, perhaps something might change through those works as a trigger... I hope this earth moves in a better direction and connects to a happy future.') The author hopes his works become a trigger (きっかけ) that leads to humanity's happiness. Option 2 captures this exactly.

    • 1Option 1 is wrong because the passage does not talk about '子供たちの夢' (children's dreams) connecting to a happy future. The author mentions his own childhood love of imagination, but the hope for a happy future is about his works, not children's dreams.
    • 3Option 3 is wrong because the passage does not say that the author 'must keep drawing' (描き続けることが必要だ) for the earth's future. The author says his purpose in drawing might be for the earth's future, but never states it is necessary to continue drawing.
    • 4Option 4 is wrong because the passage does not claim that nurturing imagination in childhood (子供時代に想像力を育てる) is necessary for the earth to improve. The author's childhood love of imagination is personal background, not a prescription for the earth's future.
    • つながる — to be connected, to lead to (〜につながる: to lead to ~)

    Show answer

    Answer: 3.

The correct answer is 3 (ローズさん). The passage states two eligibility conditions that must BOTH be met: (1) currently studying at a Japanese university or graduate school as a foreign student, and (2) planning to work in Japan after graduation. Based on the official answer, ローズさん is the student who satisfies both conditions. However, the descriptions of each student that would normally accompany the names are missing from the transcription (see issues).

    • 1チャンさん — Based on the official answer, this student does not meet both eligibility conditions. Without the student descriptions we cannot specify which condition fails, but the official key marks this as incorrect.
Similarly, this student fails to meet one or both of the two required conditions per the official answer key.
This student also does not satisfy both conditions according to the official answer.
    • 応募資格おうぼしかく — application requirements/eligibility
    • たす — to satisfy (conditions), to fulfill

    Show answer

    Answer: 4.

Option 4 is correct. The passage states under 応募の決まり rule (4): 「応募は1名1点とします」, which means each person may submit only one essay. Option 4 says 「一人が応募する小論文は、1点だけにしなければならない」 — this directly restates that rule.

    • 1Option 1 says the essay must be within 5,000 characters INCLUDING the summary However, the passage clearly states the essay itself should be 4,500–5,000 characters, and SEPARATELY (別に) a 400-character summary must be written on the application form. The summary is not included in the character count, making this option wrong.
    • 2Option 2 says the application form must be submitted before the essay. The passage says to create the essay on a computer and submit it together with (とともに) the designated application form as an email attachment. There is no requirement to submit the form first; they are submitted together.
    • 3Option 3 says the application form must be requested from the university. The passage says the form can be downloaded from the homepage (下記ホームページからダウンロードしてください), so contacting the university to have it sent is unnecessary and incorrect.
    • 要旨ようし — summary, abstract (of a paper)
    • 取り寄せる(とりよせる) — to send for, to request and obtain
    • 添付てんぷ — attachment (to an email)
