Questions from the JLPT July 2012 past paper

    Answer: 4.

Option 4 (メールは、読みやすいように工夫して書いたほうがいい, 'Email should be written with effort to make it easy to read') is correct. The entire passage is about how to write readable emails: 「読みやすいメールを書くには、どのような工夫が必要でしょうか」 and then lists specific techniques (short lines, blank lines between topics, repeating important info at the end, adding contact details). The main thesis is that you should put effort into making emails easy to read.

    • 1メールは都合のいいときに送ることができて便利だ ('Email is convenient because you can send it at a convenient time') — the passage says the RECEIVER can read at a convenient time (時間を選んで読める), not that the sender can send at a convenient time. This reverses the subject.
    • 2メールをもらった人は読みたいものを選んで読める ('The person who receives email can choose what they want to read') — the passage says the receiver can choose WHEN to read (時間を選んで読める), not WHICH emails to read. This distorts the meaning.
    • 3メールは手で書かれた手紙やFAXより読みにくい ('Email is harder to read than handwritten letters or FAX') — the passage never compares email to handwritten letters or FAX in terms of readability. This is not stated.
    • 工夫くふう — effort; ingenuity; device/method to improve something
    • みやすい — easy to read

    Answer: 2.

Option 2 (特に重要なことは、メールの一番最初に書く, 'Write especially important things at the very beginning of the email') is what is NOT said. The passage actually says the opposite: 「約束の時間や場所など、特に重要なことは、文章の最後にもう一度書いたほうがいい」 ('Important things like appointment times and places should be written again at the END of the message'). So the passage recommends writing important things at the end, not at the beginning — option 2 contradicts this and is therefore what was never said.

So this is not the answer.
So this is not the answer.
    • 4最後に名前、メールアドレス、電話・FAX番号を書く ('Write name, email address, phone/FAX numbers at the end') — this IS stated: 「文章を全部書き終わったら、自分の名前と連絡先を書きます... So this is not the answer.

    Show answer

    Answer: 2.

Option 2 (一行の長さをもっと短くする, 'Make the line length shorter') is correct. The passage advises: 「一行の文字数を多くしないで、短く切って次の行に進むようにしましょう」 ('Don't put too many characters on one line; cut it short and move to the next line'). Looking at the sample email, the lines are written as long continuous sentences without line breaks (e.g., 「会議の時間と場所が決まりました。 ...」 all on one line). According to the passage's advice, these lines should be broken into shorter segments.

    • 1同じ内容について2回書かない ('Don't write the same content twice') — the passage actually RECOMMENDS writing important things twice (at the end): 「文章の最後にもう一度書いたほうがいい。」 The sample email does repeat the time/place at the end, which follows the advice, so this is not the fix needed.
    • 3電話やFAX番号などを書かない ('Don't write phone/FAX numbers') — the passage explicitly says to include them: 「メールアドレスのほかに自分の電話番号とFAX番号も知らせておきましょう。」 The sample email correctly includes them, so removing them would be wrong.
    • 4行と行の間をもっと広くあける ('Make the spacing between lines wider') — the passage says to leave one blank line between different topics (一行あける), not to make spacing 'wider' in a general sense. The sample email's main issue is line length, not spacing between lines.
    • 短く切る(みじかくきる) — to cut short; to break into shorter segments
    • なお — to fix; to correct
