The park is a place where everyone can relax.

それを市民の憩いの場として利用するために宝ヶ池公園が作られた。

大江匡（おおえただす）設計の建物は、京都の町家のモチーフをとりいれた現代建築で、地下2階から地上3階まで吹き抜けとなった中庭、カフェ・レストラン、屋上庭園、茶室などが憩いの空間を形成している。

The building, designed by Tadasu OE, is in a modern style of architecture using a motif of the traditional Kyoto machiya, and its internal atmosphere is very comfortable with a courtyard surrounded by buildings with two stories below and three above ground, a coffee shop, a restaurant, a tearoom, and a rooftop garden.

各地方のインフラ整備や都市の過密化が急激に進められ、四大公害病等の高度経済成長の影の面が顕在化してきていた当時、憩いの場としての自然を見直そうというこの構想は、国民から絶大な支持を得、以後、これを習って数々の自然歩道が整備された。

At that time, induced by the drastic infrastructure development and urban congestion, negative impacts of the rapid economic growth, including four major pollution diseases, anticipated to become more serious, and therefore, when this project proposed the reevaluation of the nature as a space of relaxation, it gained the public overwhelming support, and since then, following this example, many nature trails has been constructed.

たくさんの木々が生い茂る公園内には、京都御所、仙洞御所、京都大宮御所、宮内庁京都事務所、皇宮警察本部京都護衛署などの宮内庁・皇宮警察関連の施設をはじめ、九条邸の拾翠亭などの数少ない公家屋敷の遺構、公園の管理を行う環境省京都御苑管理事務所のほか、グラウンドやテニスもあり、市民の憩いの場になっている。

Kyoto Gyoen is a relaxing place for citizens with abundant trees, together with facilities related to the Imperial Household Agency and Imperial Guard such as the Kyoto Imperial Palace, Sento Imperial Palace, Kyoto Omiya Imperial Palace, Kyoto Office of the Imperial Household Agency and Kyoto Guard Station of the Imperial Guard Headquarters, several remains of residences of the nobility such as Shusui-Tei which used to be Kujo House, Kyoto Gyoen National Garden Office, Ministry of the Environment which manages the garden, and athletic facilities such as a playground and tennis court.
