Questions from the JLPT Dec 2013 past paper

    Answer: 1.

This means: 'In the settings where science produces dramatic results, the fresh surprises and trivial ideas that everyone experiences in daily life serve as their starting point.' The referent of 'その起点' (that starting point) is the starting point of science producing dramatic results—i.e., major inventions and discoveries. Option 1, '科学における大きな発明や発見' (major inventions and discoveries in science), correctly identifies this referent.

    • 2日常のなかでの新鮮な発想 means 'fresh ideas in daily life.' These are the things that SERVE as the starting point, not the thing whose starting point is being discussed. The question asks what 'その起点' is the starting point OF, not what the starting point IS.
    • 3生活のなかの科学的体験 means 'scientific experiences in daily life.' The passage does not discuss scientific experiences in daily life as a category; it discusses everyday surprises and ideas as the origin of scientific breakthroughs.
    • 4実生活に役立つ科学 means 'science useful in daily life.' The passage is about science producing dramatic results (飛躍的な成果), not about science being useful in daily life; this reverses the relationship described.
    • たわいのない — trivial; insignificant (here: small)
    • 首尾一貫しゅびいっかん — consistent from beginning to end

    Show answer

    Answer: 3.

The passage states: '思いつきや驚きは、新しい確かな「ものの見方」へのきっかけでしかなく' — ideas and surprises are merely triggers (きっかけ) toward a new, reliable 'way of seeing things.' Later, the author writes about looking at things '少し違った角度から' (from a slightly different angle). Option 3, 'いつもとは違う視点を得る契機となるもの' (something that becomes an opportunity to gain a perspective different from usual), directly captures this: 思いつきや驚き are the starting point/trigger, not the essence of science itself.

    • 1科学的な「ものの見方」の本質を形づくるもの — The passage explicitly says ideas and surprises are 'きっかけでしかなく' (merely a trigger), and that the essence of science is 創意工夫 (creative ingenuity). They are not the 本質 (essence) themselves.
The passage says everyday surprises/ideas are the starting point of science, not that they relate scientific theory to everyday events. This reverses the direction.
    • 4創意工夫をする過程で生まれてくるもの — The passage says the opposite: 思いつきや驚き come first, and then science refines them through 創意工夫. They are not born from the process of 創意工夫.

    Answer: 1.

The final paragraph describes the common attitude: being surprised, looking from a different angle, making it consistent and reliable, and then considering whether common sense could become richer through a slightly different 'way of seeing things.' The key is that they do NOT leave the surprise/idea as-is ('思いついて終わり、驚いただけ、ということにならないところが…科学の特徴'), and they adopt a view different from common sense ('常識とは少し違った「ものの見方」をしたとき'). Option 1 captures both elements: not leaving ideas as-is and trying to see things differently from common sense.

The passage never mentions explaining surprises through existing scientific knowledge. Instead, it says surprises lead to new ways of seeing things.
The focus is on refining insights and enriching common sense, not personal skill acquisition.
    • 4発想の転換をすることで、常識的な「ものの見方」を否定しようとする — The passage says the goal is to make common sense 'より豊かなもの' (richer), not to 否定 (deny) it. This is a critical distinction.
    • 首尾一貫しゅびいっかん — consistency from beginning to end
