Questions from the JLPT Dec 2013 past paper

    Show answer

    Answer: 4. 自分のことをよりよく知ることにつながる。

The author states in the very first sentence: 「①面接の準備をする作業は自分自身を見つめ直すいいきっかけになると私は思います」—preparing for an interview is a good opportunity to re-examine oneself. The author then lists the kinds of self-reflective questions this process prompts (「自分って要するになんだろう?何が人と違って、どこが優れているんだろう?」). Option 4, 「自分のことをよりよく知ることにつながる」(leads to knowing yourself better), captures this overall idea of 見つめ直す (re-examining oneself) most accurately.

    • 1「人とは違う優れた能力を発見することにつながる」focuses only on the phrase 「どこが優れているんだろう」, which is just one part of the self-reflection. The author's point is broader: re-examining oneself overall, not only discovering superior abilities.
    • 2「自分の本当にしたいことが見えてくるようになる」is not mentioned anywhere in the passage. The preparation is about understanding who you are and expressing it concisely, not about finding what you truly want to do.
    • 3「自分のことをありのままに語れるようになる」is incorrect because the passage emphasizes 的確に語る (speaking accurately/precisely) and 絞り込む (narrowing down), not ありのまま (as-is, without selection). The author's point is about condensing, not raw self-expression.
    • 見つめ直す(みつめなおす) — to re-examine, to look at oneself again reflectively
    • 的確てきかく — accurate, precise, appropriate
    • 絞り込む(しぼりこむ) — to narrow down, to condense
  2. 2.面接と新聞の共通点は何か。

    1. 1 できるだけ多くのことを正確に伝えなければならない。
    2. 2 相手が何を知りたいかを考えて伝えなければならない。
    3. 3 伝えたいことを選んで簡潔に伝えなければならない。
    4. 4 実際にあったことだけを伝えなければならない。
    Show answer

    Answer: 3. 伝えたいことを選んで簡潔に伝えなければならない。

The passage draws a parallel between interviews and newspapers. For interviews: one must condense oneself into 「短い的確な言葉」(short, precise words) and 「ヒトコトで表現する」(express in a single phrase). For newspapers: a reporter selects from 「膨大な事実の中からニュースと判断されるものを探し出し、たった一言でまとめてしまう」(finds what counts as news from a vast amount of facts and summarizes it in just one phrase). The common point is selecting what matters and conveying it concisely. Option 3, 「伝えたいことを選んで簡潔に伝えなければならない」, captures this perfectly.

    • 1「できるだけ多くのことを正確に伝えなければならない」is the opposite of what the passage says. Both interviews and newspapers require condensing, not conveying as much as possible.
    • 2「相手が何を知りたいかを考えて伝えなければならない」is not discussed. The passage focuses on selecting and condensing information, not on considering the audience's desires.
    • 4「実際にあったことだけを伝えなければならない」is not the shared point. The passage says that merely listing facts (事実だけを列挙) is not enough; selection and condensation are key.
    • 膨大ぼうだい — enormous, vast
    • 列挙れっきょ — listing, enumeration
    • 簡潔かんけつ — concise, brief and clear
  3. 3.自分自身を見出しにするとあるが、どういうことか。

    1. 1 これまで生きてきた自分について短く的確に語る。
    2. 2 これまでの人生で感動したことを印象的に伝える。
    3. 3 自身にとっての大きな出来事をまとめて説明する。
    4. 4 自身の経験を時の流れに沿って分かりやすく説明する。
    Show answer

    Answer: 1. これまで生きてきた自分について短く的確に語る。

The phrase ②自分自身を見出しにする is a wordplay connecting to the newspaper metaphor: 見出し (みだし) means 'headline.' Just as a reporter condenses vast facts into a headline, in an interview you must condense your entire life—「自分の人生という長く膨大な時の流れと経験の数々…それをたったヒトコトで表現する」—into a single, precise phrase. Option 1, 「これまで生きてきた自分について短く的確に語る」(speaking briefly and accurately about yourself who has lived until now), matches this idea of condensing your life into a short, precise expression.

    • 2「これまでの人生で感動したことを印象的に伝える」focuses on 'impressive/moving things,' which is not what the passage discusses. The point is about condensing all of one's life and thoughts, not selectively highlighting emotional moments.
    • 3「自身にとっての大きな出来事をまとめて説明する」is too narrow. The passage mentions 「長く膨大な時の流れと経験の数々」and 「ありとあらゆる思い」, not just major events.
    • 4「自身の経験を時の流れに沿って分かりやすく説明する」suggests a chronological, detailed explanation—the opposite of condensing into ヒトコト. The passage explicitly says you must express everything in just one phrase.
    • 見出みだ — headline (of a newspaper); here used as a metaphor for condensing oneself into a single phrase
    • 去来きょらい — coming and going (of thoughts/feelings); here, thoughts that come to mind
    • ありとあらゆる — all possible, every conceivable
