hai, to iu koto de,
All right, so...
kyou wa desu ne, majime na hanashi.
Today's topic is a serious one.
majime na hanashi.
A serious topic.
minna, ressun ya gakkou igai de nihon go dou yatte hanashiten no? tte iu hanashi desu.
How do you all speak Japanese outside of lessons or school? That's today's topic.
dou yatte hanashiteru? tte iu hanashi desu ne.
How do you find opportunities to speak it?
hai, nihon ni sunderu kata to ka,
If you live in Japan,
nihon no chikaku no chiiki ni sunderu kata wa desu ne,
or somewhere close to Japan,
nihon no chikaku no chiiki to iu ka, kuni ne.
well, not a region—another country near Japan,
warito ne, nihonnin to no deai to ka,
you may have quite a few opportunities to meet Japanese people
shizen ni nihon go o hanasu chansu ga aru ka mo shiremasen ga,
and naturally get a chance to speak Japanese.
nihonnin ga seisoku shite inai kuni.
nihonnin wa rea pokemon desu kara ne.
Japanese people are like rare Pokémon there.
nakanaka imasen.
You hardly ever find them.
deaimasen.
You don't meet any.
saikin wa en'yasu mo arimasu shi,
The yen has also been weak lately,
kaigai ni iku nihonnin ga hette iru to iu nyuusu mo
mimi ni shimasu.
are traveling overseas.
And Japanese people tend to go to the same places.
Because they want to study English.
oosutoraria, meruborun.
Melbourne, Australia.
daitai meruborun.
It's usually Melbourne.
kanada, bankuubaa.
Vancouver, Canada.
They tend to go to the same places, right? I went to Vancouver too.
There are so many Japanese people there.
metcha iru no.
So many.
de mo, sou ja nai hitotachi wa, dou yatte nihon goryoku o iji shitemasu ka?
But if you aren't in a place like that, how do you maintain your Japanese ability?
soshite, dou yatte nihonnin to kaiwa o shite imasu ka?
muzukashii desu yo ne. kore tte.
It's difficult, isn't it?
minasan ne, kekkou kore nayanderu kata, ooi to omou n desu kedo,
I think a lot of you struggle with this.
iroiro na houhou arimasu yo ne.
There are various ways to do it.
tatoeba, gengo koukan ibento ni itte miru.
For example, you could try going to a language-exchange event.
hai, saikin wa ooi desu kara ne.
There are many of them these days.
nihon go mo kekkou ninki desu kara.
Japanese is quite popular too.
ato wa nan deshita kke?
What else is there?
apuri desu yo ne.
Apps, of course.
gengo koukan apuri.
Language-exchange apps.
gengo koukan paatonaa sagashi apuri, arimasu yo ne.
Apps for finding language-exchange partners.
○○Talk
○ ○ Talk to ka sa,
Things like ○○Talk,
○○demとかね。
○ ○ dem to ka ne.
or ○○dem.
Hello○○
Is Hello○○ the most popular? Anyway, those apps exist.
maa, watashi wa jitsu wa mukashi, ima wa anmari shitenai n desu kedo,
I actually used to use them, although I don't anymore.
mukashi, eigo no benkyou o shite ita toki ni
When I was studying English,
yoku kono 2 tsu o riyou shite imashita.
I often used both of those options.
gengo koukan ibento to apuri, paatonaa sagashi apuri desu ne.
Language-exchange events and partner-finding apps.
tada desu ne,
However,
my memories of language-exchange events are terrible.
実は。
jitsu wa.
Honestly.
nan kai ka itta n da kedo,
I went several times,
nan kai ka itte mo saiaku de.
and every time was terrible.
mazu, gengo koukan no ibento tte, kihon wan dorinku to ka de sanka dekiru mitai na kanji.
First, you can usually join a language-exchange event just by buying one drink.
kafe to ka de yatteru no.
They're held at places like cafés.
watashi wa kanada no bankuubaa no ibento ni nan kai ka itta koto ga aru n da kedo.
I went to events in Vancouver, Canada, several times.
1 kaime wa goukon mitai na.
The first one felt like a singles mixer.
kawaii onnanoko, nihonnin josei to kanada no otokotachi, mitai na kanji no kuuki ni natte.
It had this atmosphere of cute Japanese women and Canadian men.
de, soko made wa ii n desu yo. betsu ni.
That part itself was fine. I didn't mind.
But everyone focused only on the cute girls,
so I went home feeling completely left out.
hai, sou iu omoide.
That's one memory I have.
sugoi iya deshita.
I really hated it.
watashi no tomodachi ni wa, minna hanashikakeru no ni, watashi ni zenzen hanashikakete kurenakute.
Everyone talked to my friend, but no one talked to me at all.
sou iu toki to ka.
That happened once.
ato, betsu no ibento no toki wa, kekkou ii hito datta n da kedo,
At another event, the people were quite nice,
but everyone mostly talked in groups rather than one-on-one.
guruupu de hanasu koto ga atte,
There was a lot of group conversation,
jibun wa kekkou guruupu de hanasu no ga chotto nigate datta kara,
and I'm not very comfortable talking in groups.
sono toki ni ne,
So that time,
zenzen hanasezu ni owatchattari to ka shite.
I ended up hardly speaking at all.
Language-exchange events are good, but they didn't suit me.
watashi no naka de wa atte, iku no ga iya ni natchatte, iku no yameta, mitai na kako ga arimasu.
I began to dislike going, so I eventually stopped. That's part of my past.
daigakusei no toki ne.
That was when I was in college.
apuri mo ne, tsukatteta koto aru n desu kedo,
I've also used apps before.
ano, maa, ii hito ni deaeta toki mo aru n desu kedo,
There were times when I met nice people,
1 ban iya datta no ga, yappa romansukei ga ooi koto.
but what I disliked most was how many people were looking for romance.
I suppose that's inevitable with free apps.
tatoeba, jibun no kao shashin o appu shitetara,
For example, if I uploaded a photo of my face,
nihonnin josei to iu koto de,
zenzen nihon go mo shaberenai, yoku wakannai hito kara,
I'd get messages from random people who couldn't speak Japanese,
" Hi " mitai na messeeji kuru.
just saying, "Hi."
hontou ni iya da.
I really hated that.
nan kai mo mita no, " Hi " wa.
I saw "Hi" so many times.
yamete! tte iu kanji no yatsu mo atta shi,
Some made me think, "Please stop!"
futsuu ni nihon go o benkyou shite iru tte iu hito to nan kai ka messeeji shita koto aru kedo,
I also exchanged several messages with people who were genuinely studying Japanese,
yappari nakanaka tsuzukanakute.
but the conversations rarely lasted.
otagai no aishou to ka mo, sonna ni sugu ni au koto mo nai shi.
You don't instantly find someone you're compatible with either.
kekkyoku, sunderu tokoro ga tookute, chatto shite owaru, mitai na koto to ka mo atta n de.
In the end, we lived far apart, so we would just chat, and that was it.
maa, ii n desu kedo. dochira mo ne.
Both options are fine, of course.
yappa nanka chotto kouritsu mo yoku nai na to ka,
But they didn't feel very efficient,
anmari umaku tsukaenakatta na tte iu jibun no keiken ga aru n desu yo.
and from my own experience, I wasn't able to use them very well.
minasan, arimasen? sou iu koto.
Has anything like that happened to you?
sonna minasama ni, kyou wa totemo ii saabisu o shoukai shitai to omoimasu.
For those of you who can relate, today I'd like to introduce a great service.
「Ohanashi Kagawa」
" Ohanashi Kagawa " to iu on rain no muryou gengo koukan ibento ga aru n desu.
There is a free online language-exchange event called Ohanashi Kagawa.
Ohanashi Kagawa、
Ohanashi Kagawa, minasan kiita koto arimasu ka?
Have you heard of Ohanashi Kagawa?
konkai desu ne, nan to, harukasan,
And this time, believe it or not, yours truly,
Ohanashi Kagawaさんから
Ohanashi Kagawa san kara
was contacted by Ohanashi Kagawa.
" saabisu o shoukai shite kuremasen ka? " to iu irai o ukemashite.
They asked, "Would you introduce our service?" So I received a request from them.
seichou shita ne. harukasan mo.
Haruka has come a long way!
「Haru no Nihongo」
A brand deal on Haru no Nihongo? What?!
It almost brings tears to my eyes. I'm very happy.
sono Ohanashi Kagawa san kara " zehi saabisu o shoukai shite kudasai " to iu koto de,
Ohanashi Kagawa sent me a message saying, "We'd love for you to introduce our service."
messeeji o itadakimashite.
So I heard from them.
Actually, I've received similar requests before.
" kono saabisu shoukai shite kuremasen ka? " to ka,
"Would you introduce this service?"
" apuri to ka nan ka shoukai shite kuremasen ka? " tte iu no, atta n da kedo,
Or, "Would you introduce this app?" I've received requests like that.
yappa watashi, kojinteki ni wa,
But personally,
jibun mo ii to omotta saabisu shika, yappari shoukai shitaku nai tte iu no wa ne, arimasu no de,
I only want to introduce services that I genuinely think are good.
So I took a look, wondering, "What's Ohanashi Kagawa like?"
mou, sugoi ii saabisu jan, tte iu koto ni natte,
And I thought, "This is a really great service!"
" kochira koso shoukai sasete kudasai " to iu koto o itte,
I told them, "I'd be happy to introduce it."
konkai jitsugen shimashita. koraboreeshon.
And that's how this collaboration came about.
Ohanashi Kagawa
Ohanashi Kagawa san wa desu ne,
So, Ohanashi Kagawa,
sakki itta n desu kedo,
as I mentioned earlier,
muryou no on rain no gengo koukan ibento o kaisai shite iru, saabisu na n desu ne.
is a service that hosts free online language-exchange events.
donna saabisu ka to iu to, kihonteki ni, doyou hi, nichiyou hi no shuumatsu ni ibento o kaisai shite ite,
The events are generally held on weekends—Saturdays and Sundays.
on rain de muryou de sanka shite,
You join online for free,
kihonteki ni 1 tai 1 no kaiwa ni narimasu.
and the conversations are generally one-on-one.
subarashii yo ne. mou kono jiten de.
That's already amazing, right?
de, kore, chotto kagirarechau n da kedo, kihonteki ni, eigo to nihon go no gengo koukan ni narimasu.
The scope is a little limited, though: the exchanges are primarily between English and Japanese.
1 setto ga 30 fun ka na.
I think each session lasts 30 minutes.
30 bun de, 15 fun nihon go, 15 fun eigo.
Fifteen minutes in Japanese and 15 minutes in English.
chanto jikan mo hakarareteru shi, shikkari kirikae ga arimasu.
The time is properly tracked, with a clear switch between languages.
eigo na n desu kedo,
As for English,
eigo mo betsu ni neitibu no hito ja nakute mo ii desu.
you don't have to be a native speaker.
eigo ga shabereru yo tte iu hito ga itara, sanka kanou desu.
Anyone who can speak English can participate.
nihon go o gakushuu shite iru hito desu ne.
As long as you're learning Japanese.
Your partner will be a Japanese person who is learning English.
minasan wa nihon go o benkyou shite iru to iu to iu koto de sanka suru to iu koto desu ne.
And you participate as someone studying Japanese.
The sessions are one-on-one, and your partner is selected automatically at the time.
daitai 1 tsu no, 1 kai no ibento de sanka dekiru ninzuu wa, 30 mei gurai na n desu ne.
Usually, around 30 people can join each event.
sono naka kara baransu yoku,
From that group, they create a good balance
nihon go o hanaseru hito to eigo o hanaseru hito de warifutte,
gengo koukan ibento o kaisai suru to iu koto desu ne.
and then they hold the language-exchange event.
saikin wa sanka ninzuu mo sugoku fuete iru to iu koto de,
The number of participants has risen significantly recently,
1 kai no ibento ni sanka dekiru ninzuu mo kekkou fuete iru sou desu ne.
so it sounds like more people can now join each event.
But they still generally hold them with around 30 participants.
kore, muryou na n desu yo.
And it's free.
maishuumatsu.
Every weekend.
shinjirarenai n desu tte. hontou ni.
I honestly can't believe it.
ibento no jikan na n desu kedo, asa to yoru ga arimasu.
The events are held in both the morning and evening.
doyou hi, tatoeba, asa, yoru.
For example, on Saturday morning and evening.
The Saturday morning event is generally at 8:30 a.m. Japan time.
asa 8 ji han.
Eight thirty in the morning.
yoru wa, tashika 6 ji han to ka 7 ji sutaato desu ne.
The evening event starts at around 6:30 or 7:00, I think.
ichiou, asa 7 ji han wa amerika jikan no hou no tame ka na.
I think the 7:30 a.m. event is for people in the Americas.
nihon no jikan no yoru wa, yooroppa jikan no hou ga sanka dekiru you ni to iu koto de kumarete iru to iu koto desu ne.
The evening event in Japan is scheduled so that people in European time zones can participate.
ajia no jikan no hou to ka, anmari ki ni shinakute ii ne.
People in Asian time zones don't have to worry much.
nihon to onaji na n de ne.
The time zones are close to Japan's.
dou desu ka? metcha yoku nai?
What do you think? Doesn't it sound great?
nan ka, 1 tai 1 de hanaseru tte iu no mo sugoi ii shi.
Being able to talk one-on-one is wonderful too.
de, kono, nan darou,
And, how should I put this...
sono Ohanashi Kagawa san no, sanka shite iru kata tte iu no ga,
The people who participate in Ohanashi Kagawa
are mostly very serious about language learning.
hobo to iu ka, zen'in na n desu ne.
Almost everyone—in fact, all of them.
da kara, reberu mo warito takame desu.
So their level tends to be quite high.
na no de, konkai, sono, watashi ga chuukyuu, joukyuushamuke ni poddo kyasuto shiteru kara,
Since my podcast is aimed at intermediate and advanced learners,
Ohanashi Kagawa
Ohanashi Kagawa san ga, tabun taagetto to shite issho da kara tte iu koto de,
I think Ohanashi Kagawa contacted me because we have the same target audience.
watashi ni koe o kakete kureta mitai desu ne.
That's apparently why they reached out to me.
chuukyuu, joukyuushamuke ni sugoi osusume no gengo koukan muryou ibento ni narimasu.
It's a free language-exchange event that I highly recommend for intermediate and advanced learners.
どう?
dou?
What do you think?
metcha ii yo ne.
It sounds great, right?
metcha ii na to omotte,
I thought it sounded great,
jissai ni watashi no kareshi, furansunin dansei, sanka shimashita.
so my boyfriend, who is French, actually participated.
watashi no kareshi wa eigo mo shabereru shi, ima, nihon go benkyouchuu desu.
My boyfriend speaks English and is currently studying Japanese.
choudo ii, tte itte.
I told him it was perfect for him.
watashi no kareshi mo ima, nihon ni sunde ite,
My boyfriend also lives in Japan now.
tomodachi ga hoshii shi, nihon go no renshuu shitai kara,
gengo koukan ibento, kekkou itteru n desu yo. jitsu wa.
so he often goes to language-exchange events.
maishuu no you ni.
Almost every week.
de mo, yappa gengo koukan ibento ni iku to,
But when he goes to language-exchange events,
there are many options because he's in Tokyo,
yoku aru no ga, 1 nin no hito ga zutto hanashitete, mawari no hito ga umaku shaberenakute owatchau to ka,
but often one person talks the entire time, and everyone else finishes without getting to speak much.
chotto au hito ga mitsukaranai to ka.
Or he can't find anyone he clicks with.

You don't know who will be there until you go, so it takes effort and can be a hassle.
30 fun to ka 40 fun to ka densha ni notte itte, nan ka bimyou datta, mitai na kekka mo atte.
Sometimes he travels 30 or 40 minutes by train, only for the event to be underwhelming.

Of course, he does sometimes meet nice people.

But he felt that the inefficiency was a problem.
" chotto Ohanashi Kagawa san, yatte minai? " tte iu koto de,
So I asked him, "Why don't you try Ohanashi Kagawa?"

So, what did you think?

Anyway,
kekka, sanka shite, sugoi yokatta tte ittemashita.
he said he was very glad he participated.
yokatta ten wa, yappari 1 tai 1 de hanaseru koto.
The best part was being able to talk one-on-one.
1 tai 1 de hanaseru koto ga, sugoku ochitsuite hanaseru shi, sugoku yokatta tte itteta ne.
He said that talking one-on-one helped him feel relaxed, and he really liked it.

The timing was also properly organized.
30 bun no aida ni 15 bun, 15 bun no nihon go no taimu to eigo taimu ga wakareteru kara,
The 30 minutes were divided into two 15-minute sections: one in Japanese and one in English.
sugoi chanto shitete yokatta, to itteta.
He said it was very well organized.

sore wa desu ne, maikai kekkou atarashii hito ga kuru to iu koto desu ne.
There tend to be many new people at every event.
da kara maikai, kekkou chotto jiko shoukai shite, soko kara hanasu, mitai na koto ni naru kara,
So each time, you introduce yourself and then start talking from there.
sono " kono hito to motto hanashitakatta no ni " to ka tte iu no wa kekkou muzukashii n desu ne.
That makes it difficult if you think, "I wanted to talk to that person more."
raishuu mo kuru ka dou ka wakaranai kara ne. onaji hito ga.
You don't know whether the same person will come next week.
onaji hito to motto hanashitakatta tte toki ni, kekkou muzukashii tte iu no wa arimashita.
So it can be difficult when you want to talk to the same person again.
