Hello everyone, it’s Hitoki

Are you the type of person who believes in superstitions
iyaiya meishin nante uso da yo tte omotte iru hito mo sono meishin o jissai ni suru no wa chotto kowai desu yo ne
Even if you don’t, it’s a little creepy when they happen right?
I’m not the type who believes in superstitions or purposely acts on them

sore de wa meishin 1 tsume
So! Superstition number one is…
suuji no 4 to 9 wa fukitsu
The numbers 4 and 9 are unlucky
nihon go no 4 wa betsu no yomikata de " shi " to iimasu
tatoeba 4 gatsu to iimasu
For example when we say April (month 4)
" shi " wa naku naru o imi suru " shi " to onaji hatsuon o tsukaimasu
The 4 is pronounced like “shi” which means “to pass away/disappear”
chinami ni 4 nin no koto wa " yo ni n " to iu no de " shi , ni n " to wa iimasen
So for this reason we say four people like “yonin” instead of “shinin”
sono imi wa nakunatta hito no koto o imi suru no de ki o tsukete kudasai
Be careful, because the pronunciation “shi” sounds like “to pass away”
ato 9 mo betsu no yomikata de " ku " to yomu koto ga arimasu
The number 9 can also be read as “ku”
kore mo 9 gatsu to ka 9 ji to iu fuu ni " ku " to yomu koto ga ooku arimasu
It’s often used this way when we say September (month 9) or nine o’clock
kono " ku " wa kurushii no " ku " no kanji to onaji yomikata o suru no de amari yoku nai mono to sarete imasu
“ku” sounds the same as the kanji “ku” which means painful
chinami ni boku wa 9 tsuki umare desu
By the way, I was born in September
You might think numbers don’t matter, but they actually can impact reality
tatoeba hoteru ya byouin no heya no bangou de 104 goushitsu to ka 204 goushitsu tte iu no wa amari nai koto ga ooi desu
For example, hotel and hospital room numbers like 104 or 104 are rare
boku wa fudan nihon de isha o shite iru n desu kedo, boku no byouin de mo 204 goushitsu to ka 304 goushitsu to ka wa arimasen
I’m a doctor, and even in my hospital we don’t have those room numbers
de mo sasuga ni 4 kai o kesu koto wa dekinai no de 401 goushitsu to ka wa aru n desu kedo 404 goushitsu wa tashika nakatta to omoimasu
But we can’t erase the fourth floor, so we have room 401, but not 404
desu no de minasan mo moshi nan ka no kikai de, suuji o erabu koto ga attara sukunaku tomo nihon de wa 4 to ka 9 o sakeru to ii ka mo shiremasen
So in Japan it might be good to avoid numbers like 4 and 9
meishin, 2 tsume wa uso o tsuku to jigoku de shita o nukareru
The second superstition is, in death liars have their tongues pulled out
That’s a pretty cruel and scary myth right?
It might stop people from telling lies, but it’s a bit scary
As a doctor, if your tongue is removed you won’t even be able to talk
Also your tongue helps you swallow so it’s very important
umaku hanasenai shi, taberenai no de chotto saisho wa kunren ga hitsuyou ni naru to omoimasu
I think you might have to practice talking or eating if that happens
moshi uso o takusan tsuite shimatte iru hito ga itara, kyou kara uso o yamereba yurushite moraeru kanousei ga takai to omoimasu
If you are lie a lot, I think you can be forgiven if you stop lying
ki o tsukeyou ne
Please be careful everyone
meishin, 3 tsume wa yoru ni kuchibue o fuku to hebi ga kuru
The third superstition is if you whistle at night, a snake will come
nan ka kono hebi wa akuryou to iu fuu ni kangaerarete iru no de, yoru ni kuchibue o fuku to warui mono ga kuru
Apparently this snake is an evil spirt that comes at night if you whistle
sou iu imi de tsukawarete imasu
That’s what we say at least
kore wa jissai ni boku no oya ni mo iwareta koto ga atte, nan ka kibun yoku natte yoru fue o fuite itara, dame da yo tte sugoku iwaremashita
My parents told me this too. It made me stop playing recorder at night
But I wondered if it’s true, so at night while taking a bath I whistled
de mo sono toki wa nan mo nakatta to omoimasu
But I don’t think anything came at that time
kizuitenakatta dake ka mo shiremasen kedo ne
It could have been that I just didn’t notice though
nan de kono meishin ga dekita ka wa chotto wakannai desu
I don’t know where that superstition came from
mukashi aru tokoro ni 1 nin no kodomo ga ite, sono ko wa zutto kuchibue o fuite ite
Once upon a time, there was a child who was always whistling
It might have been a superstition invented by annoyed neighbors
The fourth superstition is, if you sleep right after eating you’ll turn into a cow
nan de, nan de
Why? Why?
tashika ni tabeta ato ni yoko ni naru to shouka ni totte amari yoku nai to iwarete i tari shimasu
It’s true that lying down after eating is said to be bad for digestion
chinami ni yoko ni naru nara, migimuki no hou ga ii desu
By the way it’s also better not to lay on your right side
kore wa ooku no hito no i no katachi ga kotchimuki ni muiteru no de, tabeta mono ga chanto nagareyasuku naru no de migi ni muita hou ga ii to iwarete imasu
It’s because of your stomach shape, laying on your right makes it more difficult for food to flow through your stomach
I’m not sure if that’s true, but logically it seems so
kore mo boku no oya wa jissai ni itte imashita
My parents actually said the cow superstition before though
If I were a cow, I’d want to eat grass all day in a field without worry
moshi minasan ga nihon ni kite ushi ni natteru boku o mitsuketara, oishii kusa o agete kudasai
If you come to Japan and see me as a cow, please give me some tasty grass
The fifth superstition is to never stick chopsticks upright in rice
tabemono ni hashi o massugu tatete oku to, kore wa nakunatta hito e no gohan to iu imi ni natte shimau no de yoku nai to iwarete imasu
It’s said that doing that is bad luck because it represents a food given to someone who passed away
jissai ni nakunatta hito ni tabemono o okuru toki, kore o osonae mono to iu fuu ni iu n desu kedo
When we send food to the deceased it’s called “oyomemono” (offerings)
gohan o osonae suru toki ni yoku hashi ga massugu taterarete imasu
Preparing their rice we often put the chopsticks upright
So in Japan when you’re eating, please be careful not to stick your chopsticks upright into the rice
gohan no chawan ni hashi o yoko ni irete oku no wa ii n desu kedo, massugu tateru to manaateki ni mo yoku nai shi
It’s fine to lay the chopsticks sideways on a rice bowl, just don’t stand them upright. It’s very bad manners.
mawari no hito mo sugoku bikkuri suru to omou no de sore wa shinai you ni ki o tsukete kudasai
I think people around you will be very surprised so be careful not to do that
Also, in Japan people are often cremated after death
kasou o shita ato, hone dake ga nokorimasu yo ne
After cremation only the bones remain
kono hone o idou saseru toki ni hashi to hashi o tsukatte idou sasemasu
To move these bones we pass them by using chopsticks
desu no de minna to resutoran ni itta toki mo zettai ni hashi to hashi de mono o watasanai you ni ki o tsukete kudasai
So when you go to a restaurant with other people, be careful not to pass things by chopsticks
to iu koto de nihon de yoku iwarete iru meishin 5 tsu o shoukai shimashita ga, minasan no kuni de wa donna omoshiroi meishin ga iwarete imasu ka?
So I just introduced 5 common Japanese superstitions, but what other interesting superstitions are there in your country?
