minasan konnichiwa hi toki desu
Hello everyone, I’m Hitoki
kyou wa ima hayatte iru wakamono kotoba o shoukai shitai to omoimasu
Today I’d like to introduce you to some slang popular with Japanese youth
minasan wa wakamono desu ka?
Are all of you young people?
tabun mae ni totta wakamono kotoba no douga ga 2, 3 nen mae da to omou n desu kedo
I think the last time I did a slang video was 2 or 3 years ago
This time I’d like to introduce slang words used by young people in Japan
1 ban tsukawarete iru kotoba, dai 1 i kyapai
The most used word is “Kyapai”
ma, shoujiki kono kotoba o tsukatte iru hito o mita koto wa nai n desu kedo imi wa nan to naku souzou dekimasu
Well, to be honest, I’ve never heard anyone use this word but I can imagine what it means
kyapai de wa nai n desu kedo, yoku bokutachi wa kyapa ga tarinai to ka kyapa ga oobaa shite iru tte iu kotoba o tsukaimasu
We often use the word “Kyapa” when we want to say “over capacity”
eigo to onaji na n desu kedo, kono kyapa wa jibun ga dekiru nouryoku no han'i mitai na imi ga atte
Same as English, “Kyapa” means something like the limit of what we can do
kyapa ga tarinai tte iu toki wa chotto jibun 1 nin ja dou ni mo dekinai, jibun no genkai o koete iru tte iu toki ni tsukaimasu
When we say “I don’t have enough Kyapa” we feel like we can’t do it on our own, or we exceeded our limit
So let’s shorten “Kyapa Oovaa” to just “Kyapai”
kyou takusan shigoto ga aru no ni boku 1 nin shika inai, kyapai yo
There’s so much work today and I’m the only one here… Kyapai!
kore de minasan mo wakamono ni naremasu
Now you too can sound young, right?
chigau, nan ka yoku shirabete miru to ima itta imi no hoka ni
Wrong. Looking at the use more carefully, you’ll see it can also be used for
mou sugo sugite mou suki sugite genkai, sou iu toki ni mo kyapai o tsukaurashii desu
“It’s so amazing!”, “I love it so much I can’t handle it!” apparently that’s when people are using Kyapai
kono kyoku maji de kyapai mou daisuki sugite shou ga nai to iu imirashii desu
I’m seriously Kyapai about this song, I love it so much I can’t control myself
jaa renshuu shimashou, se ー no, Onomappu wa kyapai
Let’s practice now. Onomappu is Kyapai
okkee desu
Okay~
2 tsume mero i desu
The second word is “Meroi”
kore wa wakamono ja nakute mo
This is not young slang…
a, wakamono desu kedo
Ah, it is young slang but
kore mo imi ga wakarimasu
I can also understand this one
onomatope de meromero to iu onomatope ga atte
There is an onomatopoeia called “Mero Mero”
mou suki sugite kokoro to ka atama ga tokechai sou na yousu o arawashimasu
It expresses the state of being so in love that your heart is melting
eigo no "melt" tokeru o imeeji suru to wakariyasui to omoimasu
It might be easier to understand if you imagine the English word “melt”
For example, we would say “I’m Mero Mero (melting) over you”
If I were to say this to someone directly it would sound too romantic, like a drama
anmari nichijou seikatsu de wa tsukawanai ka na to omoimasu
I don’t think it’s used much in everyday life
to iu koto de, mero i wa meromero ni naru hodo kakko ii kawaii to iu imi ni naru sou desu
So “Meroi” means “cool and cute”, enough to make you fall in love
suki na kono egao ga mero i
I love their smile, it’s “Meroi”
mero i o koeru to geki mero ni narurashii desu
Apparently when it goes beyond “Meroi” it becomes “Super Meroi”
“Geki” means “Extremely” (or super)
meroraseru to iu kotoba ga aru mitai desu
It also seems like it can become a verb like “Meroraseru”
“It seems like I was charmed by that idol”
meroraserareta ga ienai hito wa
People who feel charmed but can’t say Meroi are…
ojisan desu
Middle aged men
moshikuha obasan desu
Or middle aged women
3 tsume wa furo kyan
The third word is “Ofuro Kyan”
kore wa shoujiki nan kai ka kiita koto wa arimasu
Actually I’ve heard this a used a few times
imi wa furo o kyanseru suru to iu imi desu
It means to cancel (kyan) taking a bath (Ofuro)
tatoeba kyou wa mendou da kara furo kyan to iu fuu ni tsukaimasu
For example, “I’m lazy today so I’ll skip bathing”
kekkou nihon de wa ofuro tte yuu to shawaa no imi mo fukumarete iru koto ga arimasu
In Japan, the word “Ofuro” (bath) often includes the meaning of “Shower”
1 tsu 1 tsu kyou wa ofuro mo shawaa mo hairanai tte yuu to chotto kotoba ga nagaku naru no de
“I won’t be taking a bath or shower today” is a long sentence to say
kyou furo kyan っ ta imi wa ofuro mo shawaa mo hairanai to iu koto no imi no hou ga ooi to omoimasu
I think “Ofuro Kyan” basically means I’m not going to take a bath or shower
ima no hito yori mo mukashi no hito no hou ga osoku made hataraite ganbatte ita imeeji ga aru n desu kedo
I have an impression that people in the past often harder and later than people today
nan ka ima no hito no hou ga karada dake ja nakute, kokoro mo chotto tsukarete ite
But people today are not only physically tired but also mentally tired
tootaru de miru to ima no hito no hou ga nan ka tsukarete iru no ka na tte iu fuu ni kanjite imasu
Overall I feel like people today are more tired
desu no de kono furo kyan tte iu kotoba ga dekita no ka mo shiremasen
That’s probably why the phrase “Ofuro Kyan” was invented
4 tsume kawazuka genshou
The fourth word is “Kaeruka Genshou” (Frog Phenomenon)
I’ve probably explained this before, but
mata dete kiteru no de mou 1 kai benkyou shimashou
It’s appearing again so let’s study it again
It means someone else’s actions made you feel cold towards them
tatoeba kekkou kinen hi o taisetsu ni suru hito ga ite, sono paatonaa ga anmari kinen hi o taisetsu ni shinai hito datta baai
For example, if you really value anniversaries but your partner doesn’t
sono paatonaa ga kinen hi o wasurete i tari suru to, sore o mite chotto kimochi ga samechau
That person might feel a bit cold or distant if their partner forgets
kono toki ni sore o mite kawazuka shichatta
When they forgot, “Kaeruka shichatta” (I turned into a frog)
bunshou de tsukau baai wa kawazuka shita, are o mite kawazuka shita yo kimochi ga samechatta, mou suki ja nai sou iu fuu ni tsukaimasu
When used in a sentence you can say “I turned into a frog”, “Seeing that turned me into a frog”, basically meaning “I lost interest in you”
de mo, kou iu genshou no koto o kawazuka genshou to iimasu
This is called Kaeruka Genshou (The frog phenomenon)
nihon de ichi jiki kono kawazuka genshou tte iu kotoba ga sugoku hayatta n desu yo
At one time in Japan, “the frog phenomenon” was a popular phrase
naze ka to yuu to tabun X de no toukou datta to omou n desu kedo
Probably because it was posted on X
aru onnanoko ga ite sono onnanoko to kareshi ga tabun shoppingu mooru ni itte
There was a girl and her boyfriend who went to the mall
soko ni, nihon da to fuudo kooto namae de ookina hiroba ga atte soko ni takusan tabemonoyasan ga aru basho ga daitai dono shoppingu mooru ni mo aru n desu yo
In Japan almost all malls have large food courts with many food shops in them
They get crowded so it’s good to save a seat before buying anything
dou yara sono onnanoko ga saki ni seki ni suwatte ite
Apparently the girl had already sat down
The boyfriend bought food and was trying to find her
sono yousu o mite kono onnanoko wa kawazuka shita sou desu
Apparently the girl turned into a frog after seeing that
chotto chigau ka mo shinnai n desu kedo, sono onnanoko kara suru to otokonoko tte kakko yokute sugu ni kimerarete tayori ni naru you na sonzai na n da kedo
Maybe it’s not great, but from that girl’s point of view, boys should be cool and make decisions quickly
Seeing not sure where to find her made her feel like he was weak
risou to genjitsu no gyappu ga atte kawazuka shitarashii n desu kedo
Apparently there was a gap between her ideal and reality, which turned her into a frog
sonna onnanokoira ne
I don’t need a girl like that
a, gomen nasai
Oh, sorry (I shouldn’t say that)
moshi wakaru yo tte iu onnanoko ite shimattara
If there’s a girl watching who can understand her point of view…
chotto boku to wa......... tabun......
I’m not really.........probably......
ganbatte otokonoko o sagashite kudasai
Just, good luck finding a boy
danjo gyaku no baajon mo atte
There is also a gender-reversed version
kekkou dansei ga gohan no okane o harau baai tte nihon da to ooi n desu yo
In Japan, it’s still common for men to pay for meals
de mo onnanoko mo saifu o dashite okane o dasu ishi wa arimasu yo tte iu koto o tsutaeru bamen mo kekkou arimasu
But there are also many times girls are willing to pay and take their wallets out
Personally I think that’s fine
naka ni wa dansei ga okane o haraou to suru toki ni onnanoko ga saifu mo dasanaide ogorareru koto ga atarimae ka no you ni shite iru yousu o miru to
But when a man begins to pay, and a girl doesn’t even take out her wallet, acting like it’s natural for him to pay
nan ka chotto kawazuka shichau dansei ga iru mitai desu
It seems like that will turn some men into frogs
But it’s true if he looks sincere it’s not like he doesn’t want to pay
anmari kansha ga dekinai hito na no ka na tte iu fuu ni miete kimochi ga samechau kawazuka shichau dansei ga iru tte iu no wa rikai wa dekimasu
But I can understand how some men lose interest in girls who don’t show any gratitude
moshi minasan no kawazuka genshou ga attara zehi komento de oshiete kudasai
If you experienced any “Kaeruka Genshou” (Frog Phenomena) let me know in the comments!
kono ta wa kekkou mae no douga to koumuru toko ga ooi n desu kedo, atarashii mono de yuu to
Other than these, many slang that overlap with other videos but new ones are
menbure, mentaru bureiku
“Menbure”, “Mentaru Bureiku” (Mental Breakdown)
kareshi to kenka o shite ima sugoi menbure
“I had a fight with my boyfriend, now I’m having a “Menbure” (breakdown)”
ma, kou iu fuu ni tsukaimasu
Well, I use it like that
de mo eigo to onaji na no de wakaru ka na to omoimasu
But it’s the same as English so I think it’s easy to understand
kore wa chotto boku shiranakatta n desu kedo, ria ko
I actually didn’t know this, but
imi wa aidoru to ka anime no kyarakutaa to ka mou zettai ni te ga todokanai tokoro ni iru hito ni riaru ni koi o shite iru koto
It can mean you’re in love with an idol, anime character or someone out of your league
mou ouen shitai to ka ja nakute mou hontou ni tsukiaitai mou kekkon shitai
“I don’t only want to support them anymore, I want to date them, get married”
sou iu kanjou ni natte shimatteru to tsukau mitai desu
It can also be used when you have those kind of feelings
tatoeba boku wa inuchan ni ria ko
For example, I have a real love for dogs
iyaiya, joudan desu yo
No, No, I’m just kidding!
chotto hageshi sugita ne
That got a bit too intense
shitsurei shimashita
Excuse me for that
saigo desu, netto de shiraberu to otta ma get down
The last one if you search online is “Ottama Get Down”
iya kore hontou? boku damasaretenai?
No way, seriously?? Am I being tricked?
“Ottama Get Down” means to be surprised
chotto mukashi no kotoba to iu ka, inakappoi kotoba to iu ka, anmari tsukawanakute
There’s a bit of an old-fashioned rural phrase that isn’t used much
If someone really surprised says “Ottama Geta” it’s already hilarious
nan ka eigo no get down o tsukete " waa, ano hitokko yo sugite otta ma get down "
They changed Geta to English “Get Down”, like “Wow that person is so cool ‘I got down’”
えOnomappu見つけた、おったま get down!
e Onomappu mitsuketa, otta ma get down!
Oh! I found Onomappu! “Ottama GET DOWN!”
sonna hito iru?
Is there someone who talks like that?
I introduced the word because it was in the ranking

In Japan, we use a lot of Onomatopoeia like “Mero Mero” from this video
