問題1漢字読み

_____の言葉の読み方として最もよいものを、1・2・3・4から一つ選びなさい。

  1. 1.二人は離れて座った。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 はなれて
    2. 2 わかれて
    3. 3 かくれた
    4. 4 はずれて
    Show answer

    Answer: 1. はなれて

    離れる (はなれる)'to be apart', kun'yomi はな, not on'yomi リ

    二人は離れて座った。

The two of them sat apart.

離はなれて is the te-form of 離はなれる, the kun'yomi verb meaning to be physically separated or apart. The clue is 座すわった, which describes where they sat, so the sentence needs a word for physical distance between seats.

    Remember

離はなれる is kun'yomi はな, while the on'yomi リ appears in 距離きょり, meaning distance. When 離 describes people or places apart, expect はな.

    Why not the others
    • 2わかれて

わかれて is the te-form of 別わかれる or 分わかれる, meaning to part ways or to split. It describes people breaking up or a group dividing, not two people keeping physical distance between seats.

    • 3かくれた

かくれた belongs to 隠かくれた, the ta-form of 隠かくれる, meaning to hide. It also changes the form to ta-form, while the sentence needs the te-form before 座すわった.

    • 4はずれて

はずれて belongs to 外はずれて, the te-form of 外はずれる, meaning to come off, miss, or deviate. It is used for a button coming off or an answer missing the mark, not for people sitting apart.

    Words

    • 離はなれるto be apart, to separate
    • 座すわるto sit
    • 二人ふたりtwo people
  2. 2.何か良い企画はありますか。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 しかく
    2. 2 きかく
    3. 3 きが
    4. 4 しが
    Show answer

    Answer: 2. きかく

    企画 (きかく)'plan, project', on'yomi キ + カク

    何か良い企画はありますか。

Do you have any good plans or proposals?

企画きかく is an on'yomi compound meaning a plan or project, with 企き and 画かく. The clue is 何か良なにかよい, asking for an idea or proposal, which calls for this business noun.

    Remember

画 has two on'yomi: ガ in 映画えいが and 漫画まんが, and カク in 計画けいかく and 企画きかく. If the word means a plan, expect カク.

    Why not the others
    • 1しかく

しかく is the reading of real words such as 四角しかく, meaning square, and 資格しかく, meaning qualification. It fails because neither 企 nor 画 is read しかく.

    • 3きが

きが is the reading of 気きが, as in 気がする, meaning feeling or spirit. It is a trap because 画 can be ガ in 映画えいが, but 企画きかく uses カク and has three mora, not two.

    • 4しが

しが is the reading of 滋賀しが, a prefecture name. It fails because it changes both kanji readings and drops a mora.

    Words

    • 企画きかくplan, project
    • 何なにかsomething
  3. 3.再度確認をお願いします。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 さいどう
    2. 2 さいど
    3. 3 ざいど
    4. 4 ざいどう
    Show answer

    Answer: 2. さいど

    再度 (さいど)'again, a second time', on'yomi サイ + ド

    再度確認をお願いします。

    Please check again.

再度さいど is an on'yomi compound meaning once more, with 再さい and 度ど. The clue is 確認をお願かくにんをおねがいします, a request to repeat a check, and the reading has a short ド with no voicing and no long vowel.

    Remember

再さい is always サイ, never ザイ: 再会さいかい, 再生さいせい, 再度さいど. Watch for short 度ど in 一度いちど and 今度こんど.

    Why not the others
    • 1さいどう

さいどう adds a long vowel, as in real words like 指導しどう, meaning guidance, and 街道かいどう, meaning highway. 再度さいど ends with short 度ど, so the long お is wrong.

    • 3ざいど

ざいど voices the first mora to ザイ, but 再さい is always unvoiced サイ in words like 再会さいかい and 再生さいせい. There is no voicing here.

    • 4ざいどう

ざいどう combines both errors, voicing to ザイ and lengthening to ドウ. 再度さいど has neither voicing nor a long vowel.

    Words

    • 再度さいどagain, a second time
    • 確認かくにんconfirmation, check
  4. 4.とても和やかなパーティーだった。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 おだやか
    2. 2 さわやか
    3. 3 なごやか
    4. 4 にぎやか
    Show answer

    Answer: 3. なごやか

和やか (なごやか)'peaceful, harmonious', na-adjective, reading なご

    とても和やかなパーティーだった。

It was a very warm and friendly party.

和なごやか is a na-adjective meaning warm, peaceful and harmonious, used for the atmosphere of a gathering. The clue is パーティー with とても, describing a friendly mood among people.

    Remember

Learn the やか na-adjectives as a set: 和なごやか harmonious, 穏おだやか calm, 爽さわやか fresh, 賑にぎやか lively. The exam often swaps them.

    Why not the others
    • 1おだやか

おだやか belongs to 穏おだやか, meaning calm and gentle, used for the sea, weather or a personality. It describes quiet calmness, not a warm harmonious party atmosphere.

    • 2さわやか

さわやか belongs to 爽さわやか, meaning fresh or refreshing, used for a morning, a breeze or a clean impression. It describes freshness, not harmony among people.

    • 4にぎやか

にぎやか belongs to 賑にぎやか, meaning lively and bustling, used for a noisy crowded place. It stresses noise and excitement, while 和なごやか stresses warmth and harmony.

    Words

    • 和なごやかpeaceful, harmonious, friendly
    • パーティーparty
  5. 5.コンピュータでデータを処理した。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 しゆり
    2. 2 しょうり
    3. 3 しゅうり
    4. 4 しょり
    Show answer

    Answer: 4. しょり

    処理 (しょり)'to process, handle', on'yomi ショ + リ

    コンピュータでデータを処理した。

I processed the data on the computer.

処理しょり is an on'yomi compound with 処しょ and 理り, meaning to process or deal with something. The clues コンピュータで and データを point to handling data, which is exactly 処理しょりする.

    Remember

Keep the り trio apart: 処理しょり process, 修理しゅうり repair, 勝利しょうり victory. Short ショ plus リ means process.

    Why not the others
    • 1しゆり

しゆり with a large ゆ is not a real reading. しょ must be written with a small ょ as one mora, so しゆり with two mora し plus ゆ is a spelling trap.

    • 2しょうり

しょうり with a long vowel belongs to 勝利しょうり, meaning victory. It imitates the sound but adds an う that 処理しょり does not have.

    • 3しゅうり

しゅうり belongs to 修理しゅうり, meaning to repair, as in repairing a machine. It shares 理り but uses 修しゅう with a different vowel and a long vowel, and repairing is not processing data.

    Words

    • 処理しょりprocessing, handling
    • データdata
    • コンピュータcomputer

問題2表記

_____の言葉を漢字で書くとき、最もよいものを1・2・3・4から一つ選びなさい。

  1. 6.明日10時にむかえに行きます。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 招え
    2. 2 仰え
    3. 3 迎え
    4. 4 紹え
    Show answer

    Answer: 3. 迎え

迎える (むかえる)'to go to meet, pick up', 迎 means welcome

    明日10時に迎えに行きます。

I will go to pick you up at 10 o'clock tomorrow.

The clue is に行きます after むかえ, which shows movement to meet someone and bring them back. むかえる in this sense is always written 迎える, where 迎 means to welcome or receive on arrival.

    Remember

Spot 迎 with the movement part for meeting on arrival. Keep it apart from 招 for invitation and 紹 for introduction.

    Why not the others
    • 1招え

招く (まねく) means 'to invite, beckon'. It uses 招 for invitation, so it cannot write むかえに行く for going to meet someone.

    • 2仰え

仰ぐ (あおぐ) means 'to look up to, respect'. It uses 仰 for looking up, so it does not write むかえ.

    • 4紹え

紹 as in 紹介 (しょうかい) means 'introduction'. It is about introducing people, not going to meet someone, so it cannot write むかえ.

    Words

    • 迎むかえるto go to meet, pick up
    • 明日あしたtomorrow
  2. 7.坂本さんはかいごの仕事をしている。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 看穫
    2. 2 介護
    3. 3 介穫
    4. 4 看護
    Show answer

    Answer: 2. 介護

    介護 (かいご)'caregiving', 介 help plus 護 protect

    坂本さんは介護の仕事をしている。

    Ms. Sakamoto does caregiving work.

The clue is 仕事をしている for daily life support work, the set phrase 介護の仕事 for a care worker. 介護 combines 介 for helping between people and 護 for protection, the standard spelling for long term care.

    Remember

Remember 護 for protection in 介護かいご and 看護かんご. Keep them apart by the first kanji: 介 for help in daily care, 看 with 目 eye for medical watching. 穫 is only for harvest.

    Why not the others
    • 1看穫

看穫 is not a word. It swaps 護 (protect) for 穫 (harvest, as in 収穫しゅうかく, harvest), so it cannot write かいご.

    • 3介穫

介穫 is not a word. It keeps 介 but again uses 穫 for harvest, while care needs 護 for protect.

    • 4看護

看護 (かんご) is a real word meaning 'nursing' by nurses in hospitals. It uses 看 (watch, with 目 eye) for medical observation, so it does not fit the general caregiving job 介護 here.

    Words

    • 介護かいごnursing care, caregiving
    • 仕事しごとwork, job
    • 看護かんごnursing (medical)
  3. 8.カップや皿を同じけいとうの色でそろえた。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 系統
    2. 2 系等
    3. 3 形統
    4. 4 形等
    Show answer

    Answer: 1. 系統

系統 (けいとう)'system, family, type', 系 line plus 統 unify

    カップや皿を同じ系統の色でそろえた。

I matched the cups and plates in colors from the same family.

The clue is 同じ...の色でそろえた, to arrange in the same color group. 系統 means things belonging to the same line or group, so 同じ系統の色 means colors of the same family.

    Remember

Spot 系統 for line plus unify, meaning group or lineage. Keep it apart from 形態けいたい for physical shape and 等 for equal rank.

    Why not the others
    • 2系等

系等 is not a word. It swaps 統 (unify) for 等 (equal, rank), which is used for equality, not for lineage.

    • 3形統

形統 is not a word. It swaps 系 (line, system) for 形 (shape, form, as in 形態けいたい, shape), which is about outward shape, not group.

    • 4形等

形等 is not a word. It uses 形 for shape and 等 for equal, neither of which gives the meaning of lineage or family.

    Words

    • 系統けいとうsystem, family, lineage
    • 皿さらplate, dish
    • そろえるto arrange uniformly, match
  4. 9.古い新聞や本をひもでたばねた。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 結ねた
    2. 2 収ねた
    3. 3 包ねた
    4. 4 束ねた
    Show answer

    Answer: 4. 束ねた

束ねる (たばねる)'to bundle together', written with 束 bundle

    古い新聞や本をひもで束ねた。

I tied up the old newspapers and books with string.

The clues are ひもで, with string, and 古い新聞や本を, many flat objects as the target. たばねる means to gather many things into one bundle, and it is written with 束, which itself means bundle.

    Remember

Remember 束ねる for making one bundle from many items. Keep it apart from 結ぶ for tying a knot, 包む for wrapping, and 収める for storing.

    Why not the others
    • 1結ねた

結ぶ (むすぶ) means 'to tie, connect'. It is for tying a knot or connecting two ends, not for bundling many items, and its stem never reads たば.

    • 2収ねた

収める (おさめる) means 'to store, put away, obtain'. It uses 収 for taking in, so it cannot write たばねた and does not fit ひもで.

    • 3包ねた

包む (つつむ) means 'to wrap'. It is for covering something with paper or cloth, not for tying newspapers with string, and it never reads たば.

    Words

    • 束たばねるto bundle, tie together
    • ひもstring, cord
    • 新聞しんぶんnewspaper
  5. 10.出張後、費用のせいさんをした。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 請算
    2. 2 製算
    3. 3 精算
    4. 4 制算
    Show answer

    Answer: 3. 精算

精算 (せいさん)'settling expenses', 精 precise plus 算 calculate

    出張後、費用の精算をした。

After the business trip, I settled the expenses.

The clues are 出張後, after a business trip, and 費用の...をした, doing something with costs. 精算 means calculating in detail to settle what was paid, written with 精 for precise and 算 for calculate.

    Remember

Spot 算 for calculation and learn the first kanji by meaning: 精 precise for detailed settlement, 請 request for billing, 製 make for products, 制 control for rules.

    Why not the others
    • 1請算

請 as in 請求 (せいきゅう) means 'to request, claim' and is used for billing. 請算 is not a word for settling expenses.

    • 2製算

製 as in 製品 (せいひん) means 'manufactured'. It is for making products, so 製算 is not a word and cannot mean expense settlement.

    • 4制算

制 as in 制度 (せいど) means 'control, system'. It is for rules and control, so 制算 is not a word and does not fit 費用.

    Words

    • 精算せいさんsettlement of accounts
    • 出張しゅっちょうbusiness trip
    • 費用ひようexpenses, cost

問題3語形成

( )に入れるのに最もよいものを、1・2・3・4から一つ選びなさい。

  1. 11.( )計画のまま始めるのはやめたほうがいい。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 不
    2. 2 非
    3. 3 無
    4. 4 反
    Show answer

    Answer: 3. 無

    無計画むけいかく'unplanned', 無 means 'without' plus a noun

    無計画のまま始めるのはやめたほうがいい。

You should not start while you still have no plan.

The blank plus 計画けいかく must mean lacking a plan. 無 attaches to a noun to mean 'without, lacking', so 無計画むけいかく means 'no plan'. The clue のまま shows the state continues into 始める, and やめたほうがいい warns against starting in that state.

    Remember

無 plus noun means 'without': 無関心むかんしん, 無責任むせきにん, 無料むりょう. Contrast with 不 for negation of adjectives and 非 for category exclusion.

    Why not the others
    • 1不

不 means 'not, un-' and attaches to na-adjectives and nouns like 不安ふあん and 不可能ふかのう, but 不計画 is not an established word.

    • 2非

非 means 'non-, not belonging to a category', as in 非公開ひこうかい and 非常識ひじょうしき, but it does not express simply lacking a plan.

    • 4反

反 means 'anti-, opposed to', as in 反対はんたい and 反社会的はんしゃかいてき, so it would mean opposing a plan, not having no plan.

    Words

    • 計画けいかくplan
    • 始はじめるto start something
  2. 12.怪しいメールが届いたときには、メールの送信( )を確認するようにしている。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 元
    2. 2 原
    3. 3 根
    4. 4 素
    Show answer

    Answer: 1. 元

送信元そうしんもと'sender, source', 元 means 'origin, source'

    怪しいメールが届いたときには、メールの送信元を確認するようにしている。

When a suspicious email arrives, I always check the sender of the email.

The clue is 怪しいメール and 確認する. You check who sent it. 元 means origin or source, and 送信元そうしんもと is the set word for the sender address or source of a transmission.

    Remember

元 read もと after a noun means source: 送信元そうしんもと, 発信元はっしんもと, 仕入元しいれもと. Spot 元 when the sentence asks where something came from.

    Why not the others
    • 2原

原 means 'original, raw', as in 原文げんぶん and 原因げんいん, but 送信原 is not a word for sender.

    • 3根

根 means 'root', as in 根本こんぽん and 屋根やね, but 送信根 is not a word.

    • 4素

素 means 'element, material, plain', as in 素材そざい and 素顔すがお, but 送信素 is not a word for sender.

    Words

    • 怪あやしいsuspicious
    • 届とどくto arrive
    • 送信そうしんtransmission, sending

  3. 13.この国では農家の働き( )が減少している。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 顔
    2. 2 手
    3. 3 足
    4. 4 腕
    Show answer

    Answer: 2. 手

働き手はたらきて'worker', 手 after the masu-stem means 'person who does'

    この国では農家の働き手が減少している。

In this country, the number of farm workers is decreasing.

The clue is 農家 and 減少している. The sentence needs people who work on farms and whose number is falling. 働き is the masu-stem of 働はたらく, and 手 after a masu-stem means the person who does that action, so 働き手はたらきて means worker.

    Remember

Masu-stem plus 手 means doer: 書き手かきて, 話し手はなして, 聞き手ききて, 売り手うりて. Spot this 手 when the sentence counts people.

    Why not the others
    • 1顔

顔かお means face, used in words like 顔見知かおみしり, but 働き顔 is not a word for a laborer.

    • 3足

足あし means leg or foot, and can mean transport, but 働き足 is not a word for a worker.

    • 4腕

腕うで means arm or skill, as in 腕前うでまえ and 腕時計うでどけい, but 働き腕 is not the set word for farm labor.

    Words

    • 農家のうかfarm household, farmer
    • 減少げんしょうdecrease
    • 働はたらくto work
  4. 14.この動物は、敵に襲われると、体をボール( )に丸めて身を守る。

    From the July 2021 paper

    1. 1 式
    2. 2 感
    3. 3 状
    4. 4 性
    Show answer

    Answer: 3. 状

〜状じょう'shaped like ~', suffix that attaches to a noun

    この動物は、敵に襲われると、体をボール状に丸めて身を守る。

When attacked by an enemy, this animal curls its body into a ball shape to protect itself.

The answer ボール状ぼーるじょう means ball-shaped. The deciding clue is 丸まるめて, to curl or roll up, which describes the physical shape of the body. The suffix 状じょう attaches to a noun like ボール and, with に, describes the manner or shape of an action.

    Remember

Spot 状じょう after a noun for shape or state: 球状きゅうじょう (spherical), 帯状たいじょう (band-shaped) and 波状はじょう (wavy). Contrast with 性 for inherent quality and 式 for system or ceremony.

    Why not the others
    • 1式

〜式しき means a style, system or ceremony, as in 日本式にほんしき (Japanese style) and 結婚式けっこんしき (wedding ceremony). It does not describe a physical shape, so it cannot combine with ボール to describe how the body is curled.

    • 2感

〜感かん means a feeling, as in 達成感たっせいかん (sense of achievement). The sentence is about visible shape, not a feeling, so it fails here.

    • 4性

〜性せい means an inherent nature or property, as in 安全性あんぜんせい (safety) and 可能性かのうせい (possibility). It does not mean a temporary shape, so it cannot be used with 丸めて.

    Words

    • 敵てきenemy
    • 襲おそわれるto be attacked
    • 丸まるめるto curl up, roll up
    • 身を守る(みをまもる)to protect oneself
  5. 15.明日のシンポジウムは( )会場で行われるので、ご注意ください。

    From the July 2021 paper

    1. 1 離
    2. 2 違
    3. 3 別
    4. 4 補
    Show answer

    Answer: 3. 別

別-[べつ]'separate, different', prefix before a noun

    明日のシンポジウムは別会場で行われるので、ご注意ください。

Tomorrow's symposium will be held at a different venue, so please take note.

The answer 別会場べつかいじょう means a separate or different venue. The deciding clue is ご注意ください, which warns of a change from what listeners expect. The prefix 別- attaches to the noun 会場かいじょう to show it is not the original place.

    Remember

Learn 別- as a separate item or place: 別人べつじん (another person), 別売べつうり (sold separately) and 別料金べつりょうきん (separate charge).

    Why not the others
    • 1離

離り means separation or distance, as in 離島りとう (remote island) and 距離きょり (distance). 離会場 is not an established word for a changed venue.

    • 2違

違い appears in words about difference or violation, as in 違反いはん (violation) and 違和感いわかん (feeling that something is wrong). 違会場 is not a word, the set phrase for a different venue is 別会場.

    • 4補

補ほ means to supplement or assist, as in 補助ほじょ (assistance) and 補講ほこう (supplementary lecture). It does not mean different, so it cannot warn of a venue change.

    Words

    • 会場かいじょうvenue
    • 行おこなわれるto be held
    • 注意ちゅういcaution, attention

問題4文脈規定

( )に入れるのに最もよいものを、1・2・3・4から一つ選びなさい。

  1. 16.このスーパーは店の前に車をとめる( )がない。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 スペース
    2. 2 フロア
    3. 3 ステージ
    4. 4 フロント
    Show answer

    Answer: 1. スペース

スペース'space, room', used in 車をとめるスペース for parking space

    このスーパーは店の前に車をとめるスペースがない。

This supermarket has no space to park cars in front of the store.

The clue is 車をとめる in front of the store. That calls for a word meaning empty room or area. スペース means a physical space or gap, and 車をとめるスペースがない is the standard way to say there is no room to park.

    Remember

Remember 車をとめるスペース and 駐車スペース as set phrases for parking space. Do not confuse スペース (empty area) with フロア (indoor floor).

    Why not the others
    • 2フロア

フロア means a floor or storey inside a building, as in 売り場のフロア. It cannot refer to an outdoor parking area in front of a shop.

    • 3ステージ

ステージ means a stage for a performance or ceremony. It has no connection to parking cars.

    • 4フロント

フロント means a reception desk, as in ホテルのフロント, or the front part of something. It does not mean an empty area for cars.

    Words

    • 店みせstore, shop
    • とめるto park, to stop a vehicle
  2. 17.エレベーターに異常がないか、定期的に( )している。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 参観
    2. 2 検診
    3. 3 観測
    4. 4 点検
    Show answer

    Answer: 4. 点検

点検する'to inspect equipment', used for checking for 異常 regularly

    エレベーターに異常がないか、定期的に点検している。

They regularly inspect the elevator to check that there is nothing wrong with it.

The clues are エレベーターに異常がないか and 定期的に. The sentence is about checking machinery for faults on a regular basis. 点検する means to inspect equipment or facilities, which fits that checking action.

    Remember

Separate 点検 (machines and facilities), 検診 (human health), and 観測 (weather and nature). The kanji 点 points to a maintenance check.

    Why not the others
    • 1参観

参観 means visiting to observe, as in 授業参観 where parents watch a class. It is for watching people or lessons, not for checking machines.

    • 2検診

検診 means a medical examination, as in 健康診断 or がん検診. It is used for human health, not elevators.

    • 3観測

観測 means scientific observation of nature, as in 気象観測 or 地震を観測する. It is for weather, stars or earthquakes, not maintenance checks.

    Words

    • 異常いじょうabnormality, problem

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 さっぱり
    2. 2 にっこり
    3. 3 ぴかぴか
    4. 4 ほかほか
    Show answer

    Answer: 2. にっこり

にっこり'with a broad smile', used in にっこり笑う

    カメラを向けると、子どもたちはにっこり笑った。

When the camera was pointed at them, the children smiled brightly.

The clue is 笑った after the blank, plus カメラを向ける. The blank needs an onomatopoeia describing how someone smiles. にっこり describes a bright, beaming smile, and にっこり笑う is a fixed collocation.

    Remember

Learn smile words together: にっこり for a single bright smile and にこにこ for smiling continuously. Both pair with 笑う.

    Why not the others
    • 1さっぱり

さっぱり means refreshing or neat, or 'not at all' with a negative, as in さっぱり分からない. It can describe taste or feeling, but not the manner of smiling.

    • 3ぴかぴか

ぴかぴか describes something sparkling or shiny, as in ぴかぴかの床. It is for surfaces or new things, not for smiles.

    • 4ほかほか

ほかほか describes warm, steaming food or warmth, as in ほかほかのご飯. It does not describe a smile.

    1. 1 続行
    2. 2 続出
    3. 3 持続
    4. 4 継続

    Answer: 2. 続出

続出する'to occur one after another', for people or problems appearing

    今日の海は波が高く、船が揺れたせいで、気分が悪くなる人が続出した。

The sea was rough today, and because the boat rocked, people feeling sick appeared one after another.

The clues are 人が...した and 気分が悪くなる人が, showing many people becoming sick. 続出する means cases or people emerge in succession. The cause せいで with high waves explains why sick people kept appearing.

    Remember

続出 is for many bad things appearing in a row, as in 被害が続出する. The other three with 続 or 継 are about one thing continuing.

    Why not the others
    • 1続行

続行 means to continue or proceed with work or an event, as in 工事を続行する. It is about carrying on an action, not about people appearing.

    • 3持続

持続 means to last or sustain, as in 効果が持続する. It is about one state continuing over time, not many cases occurring.

    • 4継続

継続 means to continue or maintain, as in 契約を継続する. Like 続行, it is about keeping something going, not about successive appearances.

  5. 20.料理中にくしゃみをしたら、小麦粉が( )しまった。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 飛び立って
    2. 2 飛び上がって
    3. 3 飛び散って
    4. 4 飛び降りて
    Show answer

    Answer: 3. 飛び散って

飛び散る'to scatter', for powder or liquid flying in all directions

    料理中にくしゃみをしたら、小麦粉が飛び散ってしまった。

While I was cooking, I sneezed and the flour scattered everywhere.

The clues are 小麦粉が and くしゃみをしたら. Flour is a powder, so a sneeze makes it fly in all directions. 飛び散る combines 飛ぶ (to fly) with 散る (to scatter), which describes powder or drops spreading around. The てしまった ending shows an unfortunate result.

    Remember

Learn 飛び compounds by the second verb: 散る for scattering, 立つ for taking off, 上がる for jumping up, 降りる for jumping down.

    Why not the others
    • 1飛び立って

飛び立って comes from 飛び立つ, meaning a bird or plane takes off, as in 飛行機が飛び立つ. It is for leaving the ground, not for powder spreading.

    • 2飛び上がって

飛び上がって comes from 飛び上がる, meaning to jump up, as in 驚いて飛び上がる. The subject is a person or animal leaping upward, not flour.

    • 4飛び降りて

飛び降りて comes from 飛び降りる, meaning to jump down from a high place, as in 電車から飛び降りる. It needs a jumper and a height, so it cannot describe flour.

    4. 4 立場
    Show answer

    Answer: 1. 地元

地元じもと'home town, local area', used with 戻る, 帰る, 就職する

    私は大学を卒業したら、地元に戻って実家の近くで就職したいと思う。

After I graduate from university, I want to go back to my hometown and find a job near my family home.

The deciding clues are に戻って and 実家の近くで就職したい. The speaker talks about returning to a place and working near the family home after graduation. 地元 means the town or area where one grew up, so it is the only word that names that place.

    Remember

Separate place from base: 地元 is your home area, 実家じっか is your parents' house. 土台 is a foundation, 根元 is a plant root, 立場 is a standpoint.

    Why not the others
    • 2根元

根元ねもと means the root or base of a tree or plant, and by extension the origin of something. It does not mean a hometown to return to.

    • 3土台

土台どだい means the foundation of a building, or the basis for something. It does not mean a home area.

    Show answer

    Answer: 4. 敏感

味に敏感びんかん'sensitive to taste', notices even a small change

    中野さんは味に敏感で、調味料が少し変わっただけで違いがわかるらしい。

Nakano is sensitive to taste, and apparently can tell the difference when just the seasoning changes a little.

The clue is 調味料が少し変わっただけで違いがわかる, which describes noticing a very small difference. 味に敏感で means having a sense of taste that reacts to small stimuli. The second clause explains exactly that kind of sensitivity.

    Remember

Use 敏感 for senses that catch small stimuli: 味に敏感, 音に敏感. Keep 機敏 for quick movements, 急激 for sudden sharp changes, 過激 for radical words and actions.

    Why not the others
    • 1急激

急激きゅうげき means sudden and drastic, used for changes like 急激な変化 or 急激に上がる. It describes the change itself, not a person who notices small differences.

    • 2機敏

機敏きびん means quick and nimble in movement or response, as in 機敏な動き. It does not describe sensitivity of taste.

    • 3過激

    Show answer

    Answer: 1. 技術

    テクニック'technique, skill', same as 技術ぎじゅつ

    この機械を扱うには、特別なテクニックが必要だ。

You need a special technique to operate this machine.

テクニック means a practical skill or technique for doing something, often for operating equipment. The clue 扱あつかう ('to handle, operate') with 必要ひつようだ points to a required skill, not just information. Therefore 技術ぎじゅつ ('technique, skill') is the closest match.

    Remember

Pair テクニック with 技術ぎじゅつ for 'technique'. Keep it apart from 知識ちしき ('factual knowledge'), 工夫くふう ('clever device') and 訓練くんれん ('training process').

    Why not the others
    • 2知識

知識ちしき means 'knowledge, information'. It is about facts in the head, while テクニック is about practical ability to do something.

    • 3工夫

工夫くふう means 'ingenuity, devising a clever way'. It is about thinking up an idea, not the technical skill itself.

    • 4訓練

うつむく'to look down', same as 下したを向むいて

    青木さんはしばらく黙ってうつむいていた。

Aoki was silent for a while, looking down.

うつむく means to lower the face and direct the eyes downward. The clue 黙だまって ('in silence') with ていた describes the posture kept during that silence. Therefore 下したを向むいて ('with the face turned down') is the closest match.

    Remember

Remember うつむく as 'head down' and pair it with 下したを向むく. The opposite direction is 上うえを向むく.

    Why not the others
    • 1遠くを見て

遠とおくを見みて means 'looking at a distance'. It points the face outward and away, the opposite direction from うつむく.

    • 2目を閉じて

目めを閉とじて means 'with eyes closed'. うつむく is about head direction, and the eyes can still be open.

    • 4腕を組んで

腕うでを組くんで means 'with arms folded'. It describes the arms, not the direction of the face.

This dog is really smart, isn't it?

利口りこうな means clever and quick to understand, used for people, children and animals. The clue 本当ほんとうに praises the dog[いぬ], so the sentence is about intelligence. Therefore 頭あたまがいい ('smart, bright') is the closest match.

    Remember

Pair 利口りこうな with 頭あたまがいい and 賢かしこい for 'smart'. Keep them apart from words for looks or energy like かわいい, かっこいい and 元気げんきな.

    Why not the others
    • 1かわいい

    Remember

Pair 用心ようじんする with 気きをつける and 注意ちゅういする for 'be careful'. Spot it in advice patterns like ほうがいい.

    Why not the others
    • 1落ち着いた

落おち着ついた means 'calmed down, became composed'. It is about being calm, not about guarding against danger.

    • 2がんばった

がんばった means 'worked hard, did one's best'. It is about effort, not about caution.

    • 3よく考えた

よく考かんがえた means 'thought carefully'. Thinking can be part of caution, but 用心ようじん covers broader vigilance, so 気きをつけた is closer.

    Show answer

    Answer: 3. この食品は必ず冷蔵庫で保存してください。

保存 (ほぞん)'preserve, store to keep unchanged', for food, data, records

    この食品は必ず冷蔵庫で保存してください。

Please be sure to keep this food stored in the refrigerator.

保存 means to keep something in its present good condition so it does not spoil, decay or get lost. The clues この食品 and 冷蔵庫で show the purpose is cold storage to prevent spoiling, which is the central use of 保存.

    Remember

Use 保存 for keeping food, files, specimens or records unchanged. For money use 貯金, for seats use 確保, for stamina use 温存.

    Why not the others
    • 1

This sentence is about saving money for the future. 保存 does not mean to accumulate money, so the correct verb is 貯金する or 貯める.

    • 2

This sentence is about holding seats for friends who come later. 保存 does not mean to reserve a place, so the correct expression is 席を確保しておいた or 席を取っておいた.

    • 4

This sentence is about conserving physical strength for the second half of a climb. 保存 does not mean to save energy, so the correct verb is 温存する or 節約する.

    Answer: 4. 疲れているのか、彼はいつもより動きが鈍い。

鈍い (にぶい)'sluggish, dull', for movement, reactions, blades

    疲れているのか、彼はいつもより動きが鈍い。

Perhaps because he is tired, his movements are more sluggish than usual.

鈍い describes something dull or slow to respond, such as 動きが鈍い, 反応が鈍い or a dull blade. The clue 動きが plus the comparison いつもより points to sluggish physical movement, which matches 鈍い.

    Remember

Keep 鈍い for dullness: 動きが鈍い, 反応が鈍い, 包丁が鈍い, 頭の回転が鈍い. For general slowness of work, calculation or time, use 遅い.

    Why not the others
    • 1

This sentence is about being bad at math and slow at calculation. 鈍い does not directly describe skill level, so the natural phrasing is 計算が遅い or 計算が苦手だ.

    • 2

This sentence is about time feeling slow to pass. Passage of time is described with 遅い or 長い, as in 時間がたつのが遅く感じられた, not 鈍い.

    • 3

This sentence tries to say his work is slow. 仕事 itself is not described with 鈍い, so the correct adjective is 遅い, as in 仕事が遅い.

    健康のため、毎朝30分体操することを日課にしている。

For my health, I make 30 minutes of exercise every morning my daily routine.

日課 means a task a person does every day as a fixed habit. The clues 毎朝30分 and 日課にしている show a personal habit repeated daily, which is the standard pattern 日課にする.

    Remember

日課 is your own repeated daily task, used as 日課にする or 日課にしている. Do not confuse it with 時刻表 for timetables, 規則 for rules, or ノルマ for quotas.

    Why not the others
    • 1

This sentence is about checking the bus departure times at a bus stop. That chart is 時刻表, not 日課, which means a daily habit.

    • 2

This sentence is about reaching a sales figure of over 100,000 yen. That target is ノルマ or 目標, not 日課, which does not mean a quota.

多彩 (たさい)'varied, many-sided', as 多彩な + noun for talents, activities

    高橋氏は、小説家や画家として多彩な活動を行っている。

Mr. Takahashi carries out varied activities as both a novelist and a painter.

多彩 means having many different kinds or talents, used as 多彩な plus a noun like 活動, 才能 or 顔ぶれ. The clue 小説家や画家として shows two different fields, so 多彩な活動 correctly expresses variety of activity.

    Remember

Use 多彩な for a range of types: 多彩な才能, 多彩な活動, 多彩な番組. It does not describe light, degree of help, or vague meaning.

    Why not the others
    • 2

This sentence is about stars shining brightly in the sky. 多彩 does not describe brightness, so the correct wording is 美しく輝く or 色とりどりに輝く.

    • 3

This sentence is about vague wording leading to varied interpretations. 多彩 does not mean ambiguous or diverse opinions, so the correct word is さまざまな or いろいろな.

    • 4

This sentence is about receiving much help in daily life. 多彩 cannot modify the amount of help, so the correct adverb is 大変 or いろいろと, as in いろいろとお世話になる.

乗り継ぐ (のりつぐ)'transfer vehicles to continue a trip', buses, trains, planes

    バスと電車を乗り継いで、やっと目的地に着いた。

I transferred between buses and trains and finally arrived at my destination.

乗り継ぐ means to change from one vehicle to another to continue the same journey. The clues バスと電車を plus やっと目的地に着いた show a trip completed by using two kinds of transport in succession.

    Remember

Use 乗り継ぐ for transfers: 電車を乗り継ぐ, 飛行機を乗り継ぐ. Contrast 乗り過ごす for riding past your stop and 引き継ぐ for taking over a job.

    Why not the others
    • 1

This sentence is about sleeping past the station where you meant to get off. That mistake is 乗り過ごす or 乗り越す, not 乗り継ぐ, which requires changing vehicles.

    • 2

This sentence is about asking a friend to take over driving because of fatigue. That is 交代する or 代わってもらう, while 乗り継ぐ is only for changing public transport.

    • 4

問題7文法形式の判断

次の文の( )に入れるのに最もよいものを、1・2・3・4から一つ選びなさい。

  1. 33.あの人は、人の意見を聞き( )しないで、自分の主張ばかりする。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 まで
    2. 2 も
    3. 3 と
    4. 4 を
    Show answer

    Answer: 2. も

    聞きもしないで'without even listening', masu-stem + もしないで

    あの人は、人の意見を聞きもしないで、自分の主張ばかりする。

That person does not even listen to other people's opinions and just pushes his own claims.

The second clause 自分の主張ばかりする criticizes the person for pushing only his own view. That context calls for 'does not even listen'. も after the masu-stem 聞き adds 'even' to しないで, giving 聞きもしないで, 'without even listening'.

    Remember

Remember masu-stem + もしないで as a set meaning 'without even doing': 見もしないで, 読みもしないで. It is stronger than nai-form + で, like 聞かないで, which only means 'without doing'.

    Why not the others
    • 1まで

まで means 'up to' or 'even' for an extreme case, as in 声まで出なかった. It does not attach to a masu-stem to make a 'without doing' phrase, so 聞きまでしないで is unnatural.

    • 3と

と marks quotation, condition or accompaniment. There is no pattern of masu-stem + としないで for 'without doing', so 聞きとしないで cannot work here.

    • 4を

を marks the direct object and must follow a noun. 聞き is the masu-stem of 聞く, not a noun object, so 聞きをしないで fails, and it also lacks the 'even' emphasis the criticism needs.

    Words

    • 意見いけんopinion
    • 主張しゅちょうclaim, assertion

The sentence has a main errand 買い物 and a second action 寄ってATMでお金を下ろす done on the same trip. のついでに after a noun expresses that 'while doing A, also do B' relation. さっき shows this is a report of what the speaker actually did.

    Remember

のついでに follows the noun for the main errand and adds a secondary action done on the same trip: 買い物のついでに, 散歩のついでに. Spot a main action plus a 'while I am at it' second action.

    Why not the others
    • 1の場合

の場合 means 'in the case of' and states a condition or situation. The sentence is not about a hypothetical case, but about two actions actually done together.

    • 2にしては

にしては means 'for, considering the standard', as in 年の割に or 値段にしては, and expresses an unexpected evaluation. There is no evaluation against a standard here.

    • 4というのは

というのは introduces an explanation or definition of a topic. There is no explanatory structure here, and it cannot link shopping to stopping by the store.

    Words

    • 買い物(かいもの)shopping
    • 寄よるto stop by
    • 下おろすto withdraw money

いったい'on earth', emphasizes wh-questions like どうやって

    (テレビ番組で)「私たちが住んでいる地球は、いったいどうやってできたのでしょうか。地球誕生の秘密を見てみましょう。」

How on earth was the Earth we live on created? Let's take a look at the secret of the birth of the Earth.

The program introduction asks どうやってできたのでしょうか about the mystery of Earth's birth. That is an open wh-question asking how. いったい strengthens wh-words like いったい何 and いったいどうやって to show curiosity or surprise.

    Remember

いったい pairs with interrogatives to ask 'what on earth, how on earth': いったいなぜ, いったい誰. Keep it apart from おそらく for guesses, とうとう for final results, and まもなく for 'soon'.

    Why not the others
    • 1とうとう

とうとう means 'at last, in the end' after a long process, as in とうとう完成した. It describes a completed result and cannot modify an open question about method.

    • 2おそらく

おそらく means 'probably' and shows the speaker's guess. It conflicts with どうやってできたのでしょうか, which asks the audience a question instead of giving a guess.

    • 3まもなく

まもなく means 'soon' for the near future, as in まもなく始まる. It does not fit past creation できた or a how question.

    1. 1 下がる
    2. 2 下がっている
    3. 3 下がった
    4. 4 下がっていた
    Show answer

    Answer: 1. 下がる

にしたがって'as ~, ...', after dictionary form for parallel change

    X社の調査によると、共働き夫婦における夫の家事負担の割合は、夫の年齢が下がるにしたがって増加しているという。

According to a survey by Company X, among dual-income couples, the husband's share of housework increases as the husband's age goes down.

にしたがって after a verb shows two changes moving together. It requires the dictionary form before it, so 下がるにしたがって means 'as age gets lower'. The main clause 増加している gives the linked result, younger age paired with a larger share.

    Remember

For parallel change, use dictionary form + にしたがって, につれて or とともに, even when the main clause is ている: 下がるにしたがって増加している. Te-iru, ta-form and te-ita forms do not fit the 'as' slot.

    Why not the others
    • 2下がっている

下がっている shows an ongoing state or result with ている. にしたがって needs the change itself in dictionary form, not a state, so the ている form does not fit this slot.

    • 3下がった

下がった is the ta-form for completed past. It would mean 'after it dropped', not a general proportional trend paired with present 増加している.

    • 4下がっていた

下がっていた is the past progressive or past state, locating the situation in the past. It mismatches the general survey finding reported in the present with 増加しているという.

    Show answer

    Answer: 3. 一方だ

増える一方だ'keeps increasing', dictionary form + 一方だ

    12月に入り、インフルエンザの患者数は増える一方だ。

Now that December has begun, the number of influenza patients just keeps increasing.

12月に入り sets a time point from which a trend continues. 増える is a change verb in dictionary form. 一方だ after the dictionary form means the change keeps going one way, so 増える一方だ means 'keeps increasing'.

    Remember

Dictionary form + 一方だ means one-way continuation: 増える一方だ, 減る一方だ. Do not confuse it with 一方で, which means 'on the other hand' for contrast.

    Why not the others
    • 1ほどだ

ほどだ expresses degree or the pattern 'the more, the more', which needs two linked clauses. It cannot follow a single verb alone to express continuation.

    • 2までだ

までだ means 'just, nothing more than' and sets a limit. It would limit the situation rather than describe a growing trend.

    • 4次第だ

次第だ means 'depends on' or 'as soon as', as in 天気次第だ or 知らせ次第. It needs a condition, and there is no condition here.

    1. 1 すら
    2. 2 こそ
    3. 3 のみ
    4. 4 ほど
    Show answer

    Answer: 1. すら

すら'even', marks an extreme example, after a noun with a negative predicate

    野党の追及に対し、大臣は満足な回答ができなかったどころか、質問の内容すら理解できていなかった。

When pressed by the opposition, the minister not only failed to give a satisfactory answer, he had not even understood the content of the questions.

The clue is どころか, which means 'far from' and sets up an escalation to something more extreme. The second clause is negative, 理解できていなかった, and says even the basic understanding was missing. すら marks 質問の内容 as that extreme example, giving the meaning 'even the content of the questions'.

    Remember

After どころか, expect すら or さえ to add the more extreme case: 'not A, let alone even B'. Reserve のみ for limitation and こそ for singling out 'precisely this'.

    Why not the others
    • 2こそ

こそ emphasizes a specific item as exactly the one in question, as in これこそ. It does not create the 'not A, let alone B' escalation required by どころか with a negative.

    • 3のみ

のみ means 'only, merely' and limits something to one item. That is the opposite of すら here, which adds an extreme case to show how bad the situation was.

    • 4ほど

ほど means 'to the extent of' and is used for degree or comparison. It cannot mark an extreme example after a noun in a どころか sentence like this.

    Answer: 3. どうも

どうも'somehow, seems', for a vague uneasy feeling when the cause is unclear

    最近どうもパソコンの調子がおかしい。この状態が続くようだったら一度修理に出したほうがよさそうだ。

For some reason my computer has been acting strangely lately. If this condition continues, I had better take it in for repair.

The clue is 調子がおかしい, a vague symptom whose cause the speaker cannot pin down. The next sentence only guesses with ようだったら and よさそうだ. どうも expresses that uncertain, uneasy feeling: 'somehow, it seems'.

    Remember

Learn the partners: ちっとも needs a nai-form negative, いったい needs a question, まさか needs denial or shock, while どうも needs only a vague feeling or guess.

    Why not the others
    • 1ちっとも

ちっとも means '(not) at all' and must pair with a negative predicate, as in ちっとも分からない. Here 調子がおかしい is affirmative, so it cannot be used.

    • 2いったい

いったい means 'what on earth' and strengthens a question word in an interrogative sentence. There is no question in this sentence, so it fails.

    • 4まさか

まさか means 'surely not, no way' and expresses strong denial or disbelief about something unexpected. It does not describe a continuing vague problem.

    Answer: 2. を問わず

〜を問わず'regardless of', after nouns that name categories

    川西ピアノ教室では、初心者、経験者を問わず、どなたにでも丁寧に指導します。

At Kawanishi Piano School, we give careful instruction to everyone, whether a beginner or an experienced player.

The clues are the two category nouns 初心者、経験者 and the phrase どなたにでも, 'to anyone'. The school makes no distinction between the groups. を問わず after those nouns expresses 'regardless of beginner or experienced status'.

    Remember

Use を問わず when categories make no difference, and にもかかわらず when a result goes against expectation. Only を問わず follows a list like 初心者、経験者 to mean 'regardless of'.

    Why not the others
    • 1を通して

を通して means 'through, by means of' a medium or intermediary, as in インターネットを通して. It cannot list groups of people to say 'regardless of'.

    • 3にかけて

にかけて means 'over a span of' or 'concerning', as in 夜にかけて or 教育にかけて. It does not mean inclusion of different categories of people.

    • 4にもかかわらず

にもかかわらず means 'despite, in spite of' and needs a situation where an expectation is overturned. Here there is no overturned expectation, only equal treatment of all learners.

〜にかぎって'precisely when', for an unlucky coincidence limited to that time

    めったに出かけないのに、外出するときにかぎって大雨になる。

Although I rarely go out, it pours with rain precisely when I do go out.

The clues are めったに with a negative, meaning 'rarely', plus のに, which sets up a contrast. The bad result 大雨になる happens limited to 外出するとき. にかぎって marks that ironic timing: 'just on those occasions'.

    Remember

Use にかぎって for complaining about bad timing limited to one case. Use にあたって and に際して for formal occasions like ceremonies or starting a project.

    Why not the others
    • 1にあたって

にあたって means 'on the occasion of' an important formal act, as in 開業にあたって. It does not describe an unlucky coincidence in daily life.

    • 3において

において means 'in, at' for a formal place, time or field, as in 会議において. It only locates an event and cannot express 'precisely when' with irony.

    • 4に際して

に際して means 'on the occasion of' an important event, as in 卒業に際して. It is formal and neutral, not used for complaining about bad timing.

    Answer: 4. せいか

〜せいか'perhaps because of', after the plain form to guess at a cause

    昨夜よく眠れなかったせいか、体がだるい。

Perhaps because I did not sleep well last night, my body feels heavy and sluggish.

The second clause 体がだるい is a present symptom, and the speaker is guessing at its cause. The か in せいか adds uncertainty, 'perhaps because'. It follows the plain past form 眠れなかった, which is the required form before せいか.

    Remember

Use せい for a confident bad cause and せいか when you are guessing. Both follow the plain form, while からには must be followed by resolve or duty.

    Why not the others
    • 1からには

からには means 'given that, now that' and is followed by determination or obligation, as in やるからには. It cannot simply link a guessed cause to 体がだるい.

    • 2わけか

わけか combines わけ, which gives an explanatory conclusion, with か, which questions or recalls. It does not function as a cause marker like 'because' before a symptom.

    • 3あまりに

あまりに expresses 'due to excess', as in 心配のあまりに, and cannot follow the ta-form 眠れなかった directly here. It also states excess as a fact, not a guess with か.

    Answer: 1. ことに

不思議なことに'strangely, to my surprise', emotion phrase before a feeling

    初めてこの町を訪れたが、不思議なことに、ずっと前からここに住んでいるような気がする。

I visited this town for the first time, but strangely, I feel as if I have lived here for a long time.

The second clause ずっと前からここに住んでいるような気がする expresses the speaker's feeling. 不思議なことに frames that feeling with surprise. The clue 不思議な is an emotion word, and ことに turns an adjective into a comment on the whole situation.

    Remember

Use ことに after an emotion adjective to comment on a situation. Use のに or くせに for contrast against expectation, and うえに to add one more point in the same direction.

    Why not the others
    • 2うえに

うえに means 'in addition, on top of that' and adds another fact in the same direction. It does not express surprise or emotion, so it cannot frame 気がする here.

    • 3くせに

くせに means 'even though' with criticism or blame for a contradiction. There is no one to criticize here, only the speaker's strange feeling, so the blaming nuance fails.

    • 4ものに

ものに alone is not a connector for surprise or contrast here. It imitates ものの ('although') or ものだから ('because'), but neither form nor meaning fits 不思議な plus a feeling.

〜てみないと'unless I try doing', てみる plus negative conditional

    あ、スケジュールを確認してみないと、ちょっとわからないので、あとで連絡します。

Ah, I will not know unless I check my schedule, so I will contact you later.

The clues わからないので and あとで連絡します show B cannot answer now and must check first. てみる adds the meaning of trying an action to see, and ないと creates the unless condition. Together they give the reason for calling back later.

    Remember

〜ないと means unless, and implies must when the result is negative. Add てみる when the necessary action is to try something and see the result.

    Why not the others
    • 1確認していないと

確認していないと uses ている to describe the state of having confirmed. It states a lack of confirmation but lacks てみる, the nuance of trying to check now, so it sounds like an excuse rather than a promise to check.

    • 3確認しているか

確認しているか ends with か, an embedded question about whether confirmation is done. It cannot connect to わからないので, because わからない here is about Wednesday's availability, not about confirmation itself.

    • 4確認してみるか

確認してみるか also ends with か, a question about whether to try checking. It does not make the unless condition needed to explain why B must contact A later.

    Answer: 2. の

    山や植物の写真家として有名な岩本まさき氏の写真展が15日からABCデパートで開催される。

A photo exhibition by Mr. Masaki Iwamoto, who is famous as a photographer of mountains and plants, will be held at ABC Department Store from the 15th.

The noun 写真家 before the blanks needs として to give the role, as a photographer. 有名な must modify the person 岩本まさき氏, and that person needs の to connect to 写真展 after the blanks. So the order is として, 有名な, 岩本まさき氏, の, with の in the ★ position.

    Remember

Spot the chunk Nとして有名な person の work or event. として attaches to the job, の attaches to the work after the person.

    Why not the others

    子供のころは、1年が長く感じられたのに、年をとるにつれて短く感じるようになるのはなぜだろうか。

When I was a child a year felt long, but why is it that as we get older we come to feel it as short?

年をとる before the blanks describes a gradual change, so it needs につれて. だろうか after the blanks needs the question word なぜ just before it. The long clause 短く感じるようになる is turned into a noun by のは so なぜ can ask about it, and のは is in the ★ position.

    Remember

After a dictionary form verb of change, expect につれて. For why questions about a whole clause, expect Verb + のは + なぜ + だろうか.

どのような before the blanks needs the noun 順番で. 提示するか is an embedded question and needs によって after it to mean depending on. が変わってくる after the blanks needs the subject 相手の受け止め方 just before it. So によって is ★ in blank 3.

    Remember

Spot the chunk どのような N で Verb か によって. によって after か often means depending on, and the noun before が is the result.

    Why not the others

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 挙げている

    3. 3 挙げよう
    4. 4 挙げるだろう
    Show answer

    Answer: 3. 挙げよう

挙げようvolitional form used to announce 'let me give', to start an explanation

    そんな身近な折り紙が今、「折り紙工学」という学問となっている一例を挙げよう。

Let me give one example of how such familiar origami has now become a field of study called origami engineering.

The answer is the volitional form 挙げよう, which the writer uses to announce what will be explained next. The clue is 一例を plus the fact that the following paragraphs actually give that example about folding research. This opening announcement pattern is common at the start of an explanatory passage.

    Remember

At the start of an explanation, watch for 一例を挙げよう, 例を見てみよう, and 考えてみよう. The volitional form announces the writer's plan, while だろう guesses and ている reports an existing state.

    Why not the others
    • 1挙げている

挙げている means 'is giving' or 'has given' with te-form plus ている. It describes an ongoing state, not a writer's announcement of what is about to be explained.

    • 2挙げようとする

挙げようとする means 'try to give' or 'be about to give' with volitional plus とする. It suggests an attempt, and it does not fit the fixed announcement pattern 一例を挙げよう.

    • 4挙げるだろう

挙げるだろう means 'probably will give' with conjecture だろう. It guesses about someone else, while here the writer is stating their own intention to explain.

    Words

    • 折り紙(おりがみ)origami, paper folding
    • 身近みぢかfamiliar, close to daily life
    • 一例いちれいone example
    • 挙あげるto give an example, to raise
  2. 51.( 49 )に入るのに最もよいものはどれか。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 ただし
    2. 2 しかも
    3. 3 そこで
    4. 4 かえって
    Show answer

    Answer: 3. そこで

そこで'therefore, so', marks a response or solution to the problem just stated

    そこで一気に元の大きさに戻せる折り方を開発するために研究が重ねられた。

Therefore, research was carried out to develop a folding method that could restore the original size all at once.

The previous sentence states the problem: with normal folding, opening takes as many steps as folding. The clue しかしそれでは shows dissatisfaction with that method. そこで introduces the research done in response to that problem, to develop a one-step unfolding method.

    Remember

そこで often follows a problem sentence with 困る, 必要がある, or しかし. It signals: because of that situation, this action was taken. Contrast it with しかも, which only adds another good or bad point.

    Why not the others
    • 1ただし

ただし means 'however' or 'provided that' and adds a restriction or exception. There is no exception here, only a move from problem to solution.

    • 2しかも

しかも means 'moreover, on top of that' and adds information in the same direction. Here the passage shifts from problem to action taken, not an addition.

    • 4かえって

かえって means 'on the contrary' and describes a result opposite to expectation. The research was the expected response, not a contrary result.

    Words

    • 一気いっきにall at once, in one go
    • 開発かいはつdevelopment
    • 重かさねるto repeat, to pile up
  3. 52.( 50 )に入るのに最もよいものはどれか。

    1. 1 活用して
    2. 2 活用するほかに
    3. 3 活用するまで
    4. 4 活用したにもかかわらず

    Answer: 1. 活用して

活用してte-form of 活用する, 'using, putting to practical use', shows means

    この折り方を活用して、人工衛星に用いる「太陽電池パネル」などの装置が作られている。

Making use of this folding method, devices such as solar cell panels used in artificial satellites are being made.

The te-form 活用して shows the means by which the panels are made. The clue is the following sentences, which explain the space problem of limited rocket capacity and how the folding result is applied. Only the plain te-form can link means to the main clause 作られている.

    Remember

To show means or method, N2 often uses te-form: を使って, を利用して, を活用して. Reserve ほかに for 'in addition to', まで for limits, and のにもかかわらず for 'despite'.

    Why not the others
    • 2活用するほかに

活用するほかに means 'besides using'. It would require another method to be mentioned, but the passage focuses on using this one folding method.

    • 3活用するまで

活用するまで means 'until using'. まで marks a limit in time or extent, which does not fit a sentence describing how devices are currently made.

    • 4活用したにもかかわらず

活用したにもかかわらず means 'despite having used'. It imitates the real concession pattern にもかかわらず, but the passage presents the folding as helpful, not as something overcome.

    Words

    • 活用かつようするto make practical use of
    • 人工衛星じんこうえいせいartificial satellite

    2. 2 かのようだ
    3. 3 のだろうか
    4. 4 というわけだ

    Answer: 4. というわけだ

というわけだ'that is to say, it follows that', states a logical conclusion

    開発された折り方を使えば、装置を折り畳んで小さくすることができ、宇宙空間に出たときには簡単に広げられるというわけだ。

If the developed folding method is used, the device can be folded small, and once it is out in space it can be easily unfolded, which is the conclusion.

The sentence summarizes the benefit explained just before: small for the rocket, easy to open in space. The clue is 開発された折り方を使えば, which sets up a logical result. というわけだ marks that result as the natural conclusion from the research.

    Remember

というわけだ follows an explanation and restates the conclusion: reason, therefore conclusion. Contrast it with かのようだ for likeness and のだろうか for open doubt.

    Why not the others
    • 1というのか

というのか means 'is it that...' and asks for confirmation or expresses doubt. It does not fit a passage that is confidently explaining a technical benefit.

    • 2かのようだ

かのようだ means 'as if' and describes something like an untrue comparison. The passage states a real technical result, not a simile.

    • 3のだろうか

のだろうか means 'I wonder if...' with doubt. It imitates a question ending, but the writer is concluding, not wondering.

    Words

    • 折り畳む(おりたたむ)to fold up
    • 容量ようりょうcapacity
    • 宇宙空間うちゅうくうかんouter space

    Answer: 2. してみるのも悪くない

てみるのも悪くない'it is not bad to try', soft suggestion with te-form plus みる

    子供と折り紙で遊びながら、このような科学の話をしてみるのも悪くない。

While playing origami with your child, it would not be a bad idea to try talking about this kind of science.

The final paragraph encourages parents and fits the next sentence about gaining interest in space engineering. The clue is the positive, inviting tone plus かもしれない. してみるのも悪くない is a soft recommendation, literally 'trying is also not bad'.

    Remember

For soft N2 suggestions, remember てみるのもいい, てみるのも悪くない, and てはどうだろうか. They recommend trying, while ても始まらない says trying is pointless.

    Why not the others
    • 1してみたがらない

してみたがらない imitates たがる for third person desire, 'shows no sign of wanting to try'. It reports unwillingness, the opposite of a suggestion.

    • 3してみそうない

してみそうない is not a real form. It mixes してみたい and しそうだ, but そうだ cannot attach to してみ in this way to make a suggestion.

    • 4してみても始まらない

してみても始まらない imitates ても始まらない, 'even if you do it, nothing will start'. It means an action is useless, which contradicts the encouraging ending.

    From the July 2021 paper

    1. 1 大人は子どもの好き嫌いを気にしすぎない方が良い。
    2. 2 大人の食べ物に対する態度が、子どもの好き嫌いに影響する。
    3. 3 子どものころの好き嫌いは、大人になってからも変わらない。
    4. 4 子どもの好き嫌いをなくすより、食事を楽しむことの方が大切だ。
    Show answer

    Answer: 2. 大人の食べ物に対する態度が、子どもの好き嫌いに影響する。

Main claimparents' attitude shapes children's 偏食へんしょく, 'picky eating'

The passage states "保護者が嫌いなものは、子どもも好きになれないということです" and "周囲の大人たちが「美味しいね」と笑顔で食べている姿を見て興味が湧き、食べられるようになることがあります". Option 2 restates this in different words: adults' attitudes toward food influence children's likes and dislikes.

    Remember

For author's view questions, match the conclusion, often marked by つまり. Correct answers paraphrase it, while traps reverse means and goal or add extremes like never or should not worry.

    Why not the others
    • 1

It says adults should not worry too much about children's likes and dislikes. The passage does not say to ignore them, it gives active advice that "親子で一緒に楽しみながら" is the tip.

    • 3

It says childhood likes and dislikes never change even in adulthood. This contradicts "最初は苦手だった食べ物でも...食べられるようになることがあります", which says disliked foods can become eatable.

    • 4

It says enjoying meals is more important than removing dislikes. The passage says enjoying together is the method to remove them, "偏食をなくすには「親子で一緒に楽しみながら」がコツなのです", not a separate goal that replaces that aim.

    Words

    From the July 2021 paper

    1. 1 誰でも駐輪場を利用できるようにしてほしい。
    2. 2 自転車を止めるスペースを広げてほしい。
    3. 3 駐輪場をしっかり管理してほしい。
    4. 4 管理人の人数を増やしてほしい。
    Show answer

    Answer: 3. 駐輪場をしっかり管理してほしい。

無断で'without permission', main request is しっかり管理してほしい 'manage properly'

The writer complains that bicycles without "利用許可シール" are parked "無断で" and says "管理人が見回って、これらの自転車を片付けたり、無断で止めている人に注意したりするべきだと思います". He closes with "料金を払って利用している人がきちんと止められるように適切な対応をお願いします". Option 3 restates that closing request for patrol, removal and warnings so paying users can park.

    Remember

For what-does-the-writer-want questions, match the final request, often with べきだと思う or お願いします. A choice that repeats a detail from the middle but changes the requested action is a common trap.

    Why not the others
    • 1

This means making the lot open to anyone. This contradicts the passage, which says only people with "利用許可シール" should use it and calls unauthorized parking "とても迷惑しています".

    • 2

This means widening the parking space. The passage mentions "止めるスペースがない日もあり" only as the result of unauthorized parking, and the requested solution is management, not expansion.

    • 4

This means increasing the number of managers. The writer asks the "管理人" to patrol and warn, but never mentions staff numbers or hiring, so the passage does not say this.

(注2) 割高:分量に対して値段が高いこと

  1. 57.この人がコンビニで売られている飲み物を見て気づいたことは何か。

    1. 1 飲み物が売れる理由には、持ち運びしやすいかどうかも関係すること。
    2. 2 量が少なくなっても値段の安いもののほうが売れるようになったこと。
    3. 3 ペットボトルの飲み物で減量する女性が昨年辺りから増えていること。
    4. 4 大きいサイズの飲み物のほうが割安なので人気が高まっていること。
    Show answer

    Answer: 1. 飲み物が売れる理由には、持ち運びしやすいかどうかも関係すること。

detail searchpopularity reason is 女性がバッグに入れやすい, ease of carrying

The passage says the smaller bottles sell well despite the price: 「値段は同じ。割高なようだが、結構人気がある。」 It then gives the cause as 「女性がバッグに入れやすいのだ。」 Option 1 restates this cause as portability affecting whether drinks sell.

    Remember

Correct answers often paraphrase the key line instead of copying it, so match meanings like バッグに入れやすい to 持ち運びしやすい. Distractors that reuse passage words like 減量 or 割高 with a changed subject or reversed relation are traps.

    Why not the others
    • 2

It claims cheaper drinks now sell better. The passage contradicts this because it says 「値段は同じ」 and calls the smaller bottles 「割高」, yet they are popular.

    • 3

It reads 減量している as women losing weight. In the passage the subject is the bottles, 「400cc前後に減量しているもの」, meaning a reduction in volume, and nothing says more women are dieting.

  1. 58.このメールの用件は何か。

    From the July 2021 paper

    1. 1 注文した商品の数を、10 台に変更できるかどうか教えてほしい。
    2. 2 注文した商品の一部を、19 日までに納品できるかどうか教えてほしい。
    3. 3 注文した商品のすべてを、19 日までに納品できるかどうか教えてほしい。
    4. 4 注文した商品のすべてを、キャンセルできるかどうか教えてほしい。
    Show answer

    Answer: 2. 注文した商品の一部を、19 日までに納品できるかどうか教えてほしい。

少なくとも10台'at least 10 units', asks for partial delivery by a deadline

The passage says 'セールが始まる前日までに、少なくとも10台は納品していただけないでしょうか。' The sale starts on 20日, so 'the day before the sale' means the 19th. Option 2 restates this as delivering '一部' (at least 10 units, not the whole order) '19日までに', so it matches the request for an urgent reply.

    Remember

Business emails often paraphrase numbers and dates. Convert relative time like '前日' using the given date, and watch '少なくとも' and '一部' versus 'すべて' to tell a partial request from a full request or cancellation.

    Why not the others
    • 1

Option 1 means asking to reduce the total order to 10 units. The passage asks for '少なくとも10台' by the deadline while keeping the rest of the order, and mentions canceling only if that is impossible, so it does not ask to change the number ordered to 10.

    • 3

Option 3 means delivering all of the ordered goods by the 19th. The passage limits the deadline request to '少なくとも10台', which is only part of the order, so 'すべて' contradicts it.

    • 4

Option 4 means asking whether all orders can be canceled. The passage says 'すべての注文をキャンセルすることも考えております', meaning cancellation is only a possibility if the partial delivery fails, while the actual request is for an urgent answer about the partial delivery.

    From the July 2021 paper

    1. 1 働いている人たちやその職場の印象がいいこと。
    2. 2 自分が希望している職種に就くことができること。
    3. 3 将来その企業が発展する可能性を持っていること。
    4. 4 勤務地が選択でき、転勤の可能性が少ないこと。
    Show answer

    Answer: 1. 働いている人たちやその職場の印象がいいこと。

抑えてトップになる'beat others to take first place', paraphrased as workplace impression

The deciding line is "企業の規模や将来性、希望職種に就ける可能性などを抑えてトップになったのは「社員の魅力や社内の雰囲気」(54.3%)。" The pattern "Aなどを抑えてトップになったのはB" means B beat A to take first place, so B was chosen by the most students. Option 1 restates "社員の魅力や社内の雰囲気" as "働いている人たちやその職場の印象がいいこと."

    Remember

In survey questions, compare the percentages and watch for words like トップ and 抑えて. The correct choice often paraphrases the top item instead of copying its exact words.

    Why not the others
    • 2

This means being able to work in the desired job type, which restates "希望職種に就ける可能性" in the passage. The passage says that item was beaten ("抑えて") by the top item, so it was not the most chosen.

    • 3

This means the company having potential for future growth, which restates "将来性" in the passage. The passage lists it among the items beaten by the top item, so it was not number one.

    • 4

This means being able to choose the work location with little chance of transfer, which restates "勤務地や転勤の有無". The passage gives it only "22.1%", far below "54.3%", so it was not the point most students valued.

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 自分自身の知識のほとんど
    2. 2 調べればわかることのほとんど
    3. 3 検索するための手段のほとんど
    4. 4 文字によって覚えたことのほとんど
    Show answer

    Answer: 2. 調べればわかることのほとんど

そのほとんどdemonstrative referent, find the noun phrase in the previous sentence

The deciding lines are "そこに文字として書かれているものは、すべて自分の外側にあるものであり" and "そのほとんどが自分とは無縁のものになってしまうのである." The その points back to information written down and kept outside the self, which can be looked up in books or on the internet. Option 2 restates that as "調べればわかること".

    Remember

For その and この, look for the noun phrase in the sentence just before, not two paragraphs away. Wrong choices often reuse a passage word like 知識 but change whose knowledge it is.

    Why not the others
    • 1自分自身の知識のほとんど

Means most of one's own internal knowledge. The passage says "それは自分自身の知識が増えたわけではない", so this searchable information is explicitly not one's own knowledge.

    • 3

Means most of the means for searching, such as a computer connected to the net. The passage says what becomes unrelated is the written information itself, not the tools used to access it.

    • 4

Means things learned by heart through writing. The passage says the opposite: these written things are not memorized and remain outside the self.

    Words

    • 外側そとがわoutside, exterior
    • 無縁むえんunrelated, having no connection
    • 検索けんさくsearch, lookup
  2. 61.文字を使わない人たちについて、筆者はどのように考えているか。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 自分の覚えたい話ししか興味を持って聞かない。
    2. 2 同じ話を二度と聞けないと考えて、集中して聞く。
    3. 3 話を記憶できなければ、もう一度聞き直す。
    4. 4 話は何度も聞けないので、忘れてしまいがちである。
    Show answer

    Answer: 2. 同じ話を二度と聞けないと考えて、集中して聞く。

筆者の主張 about people without writing: no second chance, so listening trains memory

The deciding lines are "その瞬間を逃したらそれまでであって、同じ人から同じ話を聞く機会はもう二度ない" and "そのような気持ちで人のことばを聞くことによって培われた力が、記憶する力となっているのであろう." Option 2 restates both parts: they assume they cannot hear it again, so they listen with full attention and develop memory.

    Remember

For author opinion questions, find the sentence with evaluation like のであろう or と思う and match its paraphrase. A choice that keeps passage words but reverses cause and result is a common trap.

    Why not the others
    • 1

Means they listen with interest only to stories they want to remember. The passage does not say they select by interest, it says they listen as if there will be no second chance.

    • 3

Means if they cannot memorize, they ask to hear it again. This contradicts "もう二度ない", which says that second chance does not exist.

    • 4

Means because they cannot hear it many times, they tend to forget. This reverses the conclusion: that attitude is what builds "記憶する力", not forgetfulness.

    Answer: 1. 記憶していなければ、知識を得たとはいえない。

筆者の結論only what is memorized counts as acquired knowledge

The deciding lines are "自分が記憶していないものは、存在していないのと同じ" and "それは取得した知識が増えたことを、なんら意味してはいない." Both say searchable external text does not count as more knowledge. Option 1 restates that conclusion: without memorizing, knowledge has not been gained.

    Remember

For whole-passage main idea questions, connect the opening example and the closing judgment. The answer usually paraphrases the final evaluation, not a detail from the example.

    Why not the others
    • 2

Means memory grows as knowledge increases. The passage never states this correlation, it contrasts external range of information with internal memorized knowledge.

    • 3

Means without learning writing, knowledge cannot increase. The passage says writing widened the possible range, but also presents non-literate people as having strong memorized knowledge.

    • 4

Means memory power is the same whether writing is used or not. This contradicts the contrast between people used to re-reading or replaying and people whose listening attitude trained memory.

    Show answer

    Answer: 3. 編集者の反応次第で意欲が変わるから。

編集者の反応とやる気'reaction affects motivation', decided by と思う opinion sentence

The passage settles this with "編集者がつまらない反応をしそうだと、こちらのやる気も落ちてくるというようなことが実際にはある。" The next sentence "逆に言うと、編集者とはそれくらい重要な仕事だと私は思う" links that importance directly to motivation. Option 3 restates this cause as "反応次第で意欲が変わる".

    Remember

For 'why does the writer think' questions, look just before と思う or 逆に言うと. The answer is usually a paraphrase of that reason, not a general fact about the topic.

    Why not the others
    • 1

This means the editor knows what readers want. The passage never says the editor understands readers, only that the writer writes with the editor in mind.

    • 2

This means the editor gives concrete advice. The passage mentions only the editor's reaction, "反応", not advice or corrections.

    • 4

This means new ideas come from the editor's reaction. The passage says motivation, "やる気", goes up or down, not that ideas are born from the reaction.

具体的な他者 vs 一般論'concrete other' vs 'general theory', cause of boring report

The passage contrasts speaking with "具体的な他者、すなわち私に向かってしゃべっている" and writing with "一般論みたいに書かなければいけないという構え". It concludes the head hardened as soon as that shift happened. Option 4 restates this cause as not writing with a concrete person in mind.

    Remember

When two situations are contrasted, the answer is often the loss of the good condition. Match 具体的な相手 against 一般論 and check who does what.

    Why not the others
    • 1

This means he wrote with the fixed idea he must write a good report. The passage says his stance was to write like "一般論", general theory, not pressure to be good.

    • 2

This means he worried about the teacher's reaction and froze. The passage says the opposite: when facing the teacher, "思考が刺激されて", his thinking was stimulated.

対話がないといけない'there must be dialogue', writer's conclusion with 要するに

The final lines settle this: "そこには対話がないといけない。要するに、人に話したくなるようなことじゃないと書いても意味がないと思うのだ。" The point is not style but having something you want to tell someone. Option 4 paraphrases this as writing what you want to tell toward the reader.

    Remember

The writer's main point often follows 要するに or と思う at the end. Do not choose a choice that repeats an exact phrase like スタイル but reverses what the passage says about it.

    Why not the others
    • 1

This means writing in a speaking style. The passage says books are normally written in a style where "誰に向かって語っているかわからない", so style is not the requirement, dialogue is.

    • 2

This means writing only what you want to write. The passage says "人に話したくなるようなこと", something you want to tell to people, which requires an other person, not just personal desire.

    • 3

    Answer: 1. 個性の重視ということが間違って解釈されている点。

The passage introduces the wrong idea as "「子どもの興味を尊重し、一人ひとりの子どもが興味を持つこと、『やってみたい』と言うことを好きにやらせることが、個性の重視である」という解釈が広がりました" and then connects it to the problem with "しかしその結果、社会生活上のしきたりや習慣を教える機会を失った" and "好きなことしかやりたがらない子どもをつくってしまった". Option 1 restates this link by calling it a mistaken interpretation.

    Remember

For cause questions, follow markers like "しかしその結果". Do not confuse the result described after the marker with the cause described before it.

    Why not the others
    • 2

This means attention to valuing individuality itself is the cause. The passage says attention grew, "注目されるようになって以来", but it blames the wrong interpretation that spread after that, not the attention.

    • 3

This means no settled interpretation exists. The passage does not say this. It says one specific wrong interpretation, "という解釈が広がりました", has spread.

    • 4

This means teachers not teaching rules is the cause. The passage presents losing the chance to teach rules, "教える機会を失った", as the result introduced by "しかしその結果", not as the original cause.

The author defines the true view with "個性の重視とは、「二人と同じ人間はいない、つまり人は一人ひとり異なる存在である。だから、一人ひとりが異なった興味や価値観を持つのは当然である」という考え方を肯定する人間観を意味しているのです". Option 2 paraphrases "異なった興味や価値観を持つのは当然である" and "肯定する" as respecting different interests and values.

    Remember

Definitions with "とは...を意味している" often give the author's correct view. Contrast it with a quoted "という解釈" that the author criticizes.

    Why not the others
    • 1

This means letting each child do whatever they want freely. That is the misinterpretation criticized earlier as "好きにやらせることが、個性の重視である", not the author's definition.

    • 3

This means highly evaluating points superior to others. The passage talks only about people being different, "異なる存在", and never mentions being superior.

The final paragraph argues that without contact there is no interest, "なんらかの形でその対象を知る機会がなかったなら、興味を持つこともないのです", and that children's range is limited, "非常に限られた範囲のものになります". It concludes with "さまざまなものに興味を持つのを待つばかりでなく、興味が持てるように、さまざまな体験ができるようにすることが大切です". Option 2 restates that conclusion.

    Remember

For "what the author wants to say" questions, the answer is usually a paraphrase of the final evaluative sentence with 大切です, べきだ or と思う, not a detail from the middle.

問題12統合理解

次のAとBの文章を読んで、後の問いに対する答えとして最もよいものを、1・2・3・4から一つ選びなさい。

A

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 AもBも、上司の言うことをすなおに聞かないと述べている。
    2. 2 AもBも、不安を抱えていて上司に質問することが多いと述べている。
    3. 3 Aは仕事に対して消極的で働くのを嫌がると述べ、Bは自身が納得できれば積極的に働くと述べている。
    4. 4 Aは仕事で失敗することを恐れていると述べ、Bは自身の意見をはっきりと主張しようとすると述べている。
    Show answer

    Answer: 4. Aは仕事で失敗することを恐れていると述べ、Bは自身の意見をはっきりと主張しようとすると述べている。

AとBの対比A says youth fear failure, B says they argue back

A settles its side with 「仕事で失敗して上司からしかられることをとても恐れているのだ。」 which option 4 restates as fearing failure at work. B settles its side with 「たとえ上司の命令でも反論する人もいる。」 which option 4 restates as clearly asserting their own opinions. No other option matches this pairing of A fear and B pushback.

    Remember

In comparison questions, match each half of the choice to only its passage. A choice that turns a passage's example of 誤解 into the writer's own claim is a common trap.

    Why not the others
    • 1

Option 1 means both A and B say young people do not obediently listen to bosses. B does mention arguing back, but A only says they fear being scolded and ask many questions before starting, so A does not make this claim.

    • 2

Option 2 means both say young people are anxious and often ask bosses questions. A does say this with 「不安を抱えている」 and 「いろいろ質問をしてくる」, but B never mentions anxiety or frequent questions, so it is not common.

    • 3

Option 3 says A claims young people are passive and dislike working. A actually presents that as a misunderstanding in 「仕事に消極的だ、口ばかりで働くのを嫌がると誤解することになる。」, so A does not assert it as fact.

共通点の把握both say accept differences and try to understand youth

A closes with 「彼らの気持ちを理解するには、自分から歩み寄ることが必要だ。」 after saying different thinking is unavoidable. B closes with 「自分との違いを認め、その溝を埋める努力をしてみよう。」 Option 1 paraphrases this shared advice to accept differences and try to understand, so it is the common point.

    Remember

For common point questions, focus on the final advice sentences with 必要だ, しよう or べきだ. The correct paraphrase is usually abstract, while choices limited to one passage's example are traps.

    Why not the others
    • 2

Option 2 means removing young people's anxiety to make work easier. A mentions their anxiety, but its conclusion is to approach and understand them, and B never mentions anxiety, so the passages do not share this point.

    • 3

Option 3 means recognizing young people's individuality. B mentions education that affirms 個性 as background, but its conclusion is broader recognition of differences, and A never mentions 個性, so it is not common.

    • 4

Option 4 means learning the good points of young people. B says 「若者には若者のいいところがある。」, but A only says to understand their feelings and approach them, with no call to learn from them, so it is B only.

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 自然界の食物を限界まで消費し、人口を増やしていった。
    2. 2 自然災害を乗り越えることによって、人口を増やしていった。
    3. 3 食物を求めて他の動物と争いながら、人口を増やしていった。

The deciding lines are "人間は、食物の栽培や物資の生産を始めた。そして、その生産(農業生産や工業生産)の拡大によって、自然界の限界を乗り越え、人口を拡大していった。" Option 4 restates this with different words: "食物の栽培や物資の生産" becomes "食物や生活物資を作り出すこと", and "生産の拡大によって" becomes "作り出すことによって".

    Remember

Correct answers in this section usually paraphrase the passage. Watch for a wrong choice that reuses a passage word like "限界" but changes the action around it.

    Why not the others
    • 1

It means consuming natural food up to its limit. The passage says a limit exists in nature, but humans overcame it by starting cultivation and production, not by consuming wild food to the limit.

    • 2

It means increasing population by overcoming natural disasters. The passage says "自然界の限界を乗り越え", the limit of nature, and never mentions "自然災害" or disasters.

    • 3

It means increasing population while fighting other animals for food. The passage says large groups protected humans from enemies and helped obtain food, but it does not say competition with other animals caused the population increase.

    Remember

For "how is X different" questions, find the contrast markers like しかし and the summary like つまり. The answer is usually the clause right after しかし restated.

    Why not the others
    • 1

It means large groups learning from each other. The passage says children learned from many different people inside the large group, not that groups learned from other groups.

    • 3

It means making weapons to protect themselves. The passage says humans were "体に武器というものを持たない動物", an animal without bodily weapons, and they formed large groups for protection, not that they made weapons.

    • 4

It means avoiding fights between large groups because they lack weapons. The passage says large groups helped "敵から身を守り", defend against enemies, but it never says groups avoided fighting each other.

It means thinking more about humanity's role toward other creatures. The passage does not discuss a role or duty, only knowing nature and the environment more deeply.

    • 2

It means changing the attitude of dominating nature. This contradicts "自然を支配して生きていこうという人間の生きかたを、今さら変えることは無理だろう。", which says changing that way of life is impossible.

    • 4

It means understanding limits and trying to change the way of life. This also contradicts the same sentence. The author compares it to telling a lion to eat grass, so effort to change the way of life is rejected.

  1. 74.ワンさんは旅行用にできるだけ軽いスーツケースを借りたいと考えている。容量は60リットルあればいい。ワンさんの旅行期間は10日間だが、ワンさんの希望に最も合うスーツケースを借りる場合、料金はいくらになるか。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 2,800円
    2. 2 3,600円
    3. 3 4,000円
    4. 4 5,200円
    Show answer

    Answer: 3. 4,000円

Reading a price tablematch type by weight, size by capacity, row by travel days

The passage says "フレームタイプより軽く、使いやすいファスナータイプ", so the lightest choice is the fastener type. Capacity needs 60 liters, and "*1 容量 S:50リットル M:64リットル L:81リットル" shows M at 64 liters is the smallest size that meets it. For a 10 day trip the "15日間まで" row applies, and the fastener M cell is 4,000 yen, which option 3 restates.

    Remember

When a question gives three conditions, check all three against the table. Do not pick a cheaper cell that is too small or for too few days.

    Why not the others
    • 12,800円

2,800 yen is the fastener M price for "7日間まで". It fails because a 10 day trip exceeds 7 days and must use the "15日間まで" row.

    • 23,600円

3,600 yen is the fastener S price for "15日間まで". It fails because S is 50 liters, which is less than the 60 liters Wan needs.

    • 45,200円

5,200 yen is the frame M price for "15日間まで". It fails because the frame type is heavier, contradicting "できるだけ軽い".

  2. 75.タンヤさんは出張用にスーツケースを借りることにした。今日は出発日の6日前である。出発日の3日前にスーツケースを届けてもらうためには、どうしなければならないか。

    From the Dec 2018 paper

    1. 1 インターネットで、今日中(出発日の6日前)に申し込む。
    2. 2 インターネットで、明日(出発日の5日前)の午後1時までに申し込む。
    3. 3 電話で、明日(出発日の5日前)の午後1時までに申し込む。
    4. 4 電話で、あさって(出発日の3日前)の午後6時までに申し込む。
    Show answer

    Answer: 3. 電話で、明日(出発日の5日前)の午後1時までに申し込む。

Reading application deadlinesinternet vs phone periods plus footnote exception

The general phone rule is "ご出発日の2か月前から3日前まで", but footnote *2 adds "ご出発日の3日前までのお届けをご希望の方は、ご出発日の5日前の午後1時までにお電話ください". Since today is 6 days before departure, calling by 1pm tomorrow, which is 5 days before, meets that earlier deadline for delivery 3 days before, which option 3 restates.

    Remember

Footnotes with ただし often override the main rule for last minute cases. For deadline questions, first check the method, then check the footnote date and time.

    Why not the others
    • 1

Applying by internet today fails because internet is only "ご出発日の2か月前から7日前まで", and 6 days before is already past that deadline.

    • 2

Applying by internet tomorrow fails for the same reason. The date is past the 7 days before limit for "インターネット受付".

    • 4

Applying by phone 3 days before is within the general phone period, but footnote *2 says "直前(ご出発日の4日前、3日前)のお申し込みの場合、お届けはご出発日の前日になります", so delivery would be the day before, not 3 days before.
