ohisashiburi no bideo poddo kyasuto ni narimasu.
It’s been a while since my last video podcast.
hai, chotto kinchou suru yo ne.
Yeah, I’m a little nervous.
kao o dashi tte.
Showing my face.
" imasara? " tte omotta ka mo shiremasen kedo,
You might be thinking, “Now, really?”
imasara de mo kinchou suru n desu.
Even now, it still makes me nervous.
hai, kyou wa nan no hanashi o suru ka to iu to,
So, what am I going to talk about today?
saikin ne, chotto omoshiroi nyuusu.
Recently I came across a kind of interesting news story.
omoshiro sugiru,
It’s too interesting
yuniiku sugiru geemu... geemu ja nai ya.
way too unique—a game… no, not a game.
geemu shi sugite geemu tte itchatta n da kedo.
I’ve been gaming too much, so I said “game” by accident.
nyuusu!
News!
It's not a game. I found some news in Japan
So, I would like to introduce this news a little
donna nyuusu ka to yuu to desu ne,
What kind of news is it?
kioku soushitsu no hou no nyuusu desu.
it’s about a person with amnesia.
kioku soushitsu tte iu no wa, kioku ga nakunatchatte iru hito desu ne.
Amnesia means someone who’s lost their memory.
de ne, kore, nan ka nazo ga nazo no nazo na no ne.
And this one is like a mystery wrapped in a mystery.
mou nazo, nazo, nazo bakkari de.
It’s mystery after mystery after mystery.
donna nyuusu ka to iu to,
So, what kind of news is it?
kore, chotto nyuusu no ne, taitoru ne, chotto mimasu kedo,
Let me check the headline.
“Who am I? A man with amnesia searching for his identity with ¥600,000 left in his bag.”
tte iu ne, nyuusu ga atte.
That’s the story.
koko suu nichikan de ne,
Over the past few days,
nihon o sawagasete iru nyuusu na n desu keredo mo,
it’s been causing a stir in Japan.
fushigi na nyuusu na n desu yo.
It’s a strange story.
chotto minasan ni shea shitai to omotte.
I wanted to share it with you all.
nyuusu no naiyou o zakkuri setsumei suru n desu kedo,
I’ll roughly explain what happened.
shimane ken no oku izumo shi to iu tokoro no yama no naka de,
In the mountains of a place called Okuizumo in Shimane Prefecture,
dansei ga hakken sareta n desu yo.
a man was found.
And he apparently has amnesia.
I mean, in this day and age—amnesia? It’s like a movie world, right?
Anyway, the person is a man, and he has no memory at all.
de, oboeteru koto wa hobo nakute,
There’s almost nothing he remembers,
though he seems to remember general things.
de mo jibun no namae mo oboetenai shi,
But he doesn’t remember his own name,
or where he used to live.
nan de jibun ga shimane ken no yama no naka ni iru no ka mo mattaku wakaranai to iu joukyou de,
He has absolutely no idea why he’s in the mountains of Shimane Prefecture,
aru hi, totsuzen me ga sameta tte iu hanashi na n desu yo.
and he says one day he suddenly woke up there.
nan ka, " atama ga itai! " tte natte,
He was like, “Ow, my head hurts!”
patte me ga sametara, sono yama no naka datta n da tte.
and when he opened his eyes, he was in the mountains.
eiga? mitai na.
A movie? Seriously?
eirian ni de mo shuugeki sareta n ja nee ka tte omou yo ne.
He’d think, “Was I attacked by aliens or something?”
de, kioku ga nakute, jibun wa dare na no ka, namae wa nan na no ka, nan de koko ni iru no ka.
So he has no memory—who he is, what his name is, why he’s there.
de, tabemono to ka no ne, namae to ka mo,
As for food names and such,
pan to bei tte iu namae wa wakaru n da kedo, mono wa wakaru n da kedo,
he knows words like “bread” and “rice.” He recognizes things,
" karaage tte nan? " " shougayaki tte nan darou? " tte iu,
but for dish names like “What’s karaage?” “What’s shogayaki?”
once it gets to specific dishes, he doesn’t know them at all—that’s how bad the amnesia is, apparently.
karaage ga wakaranai
He doesn't know karaage
nihonnin ga kono sekai ni sonzai shiteru nante.
A Japanese person who doesn’t know karaage—existing in this world?
nee. minna mo shitteru yo ne, karaage, ne, oishii yo ne.
Right? You all know karaage—yeah, it’s delicious.
de mo pan to bei wa wakarurashii ne.
But apparently he knows “bread” and “rice.”
fushigi desu ne, kore wa.
It’s strange, really.
So, this “Mr. Tanaka”… how should I put it—
jibun no namae ga wakaranai kara,
since he doesn’t know his own name,
toriaezu jibun no koto o " tanaka hajime ( tanaka hajime) " tte nanoru you ni shita no.
he decided to call himself “Tanaka Hajime” for now.
tanaka tte, futsuu no myouji da shi, " hajime " tte iu no mo kanji no 1 tte iu ji.
“Tanaka” is a common surname, and “Hajime” uses the kanji for the number 1.
yoku nihon no, nan darou, nan ka Smith mitai na.
It’s kind of like “Smith” in Japan.
" yamada tarou " to ka sa, " tanaka hajime " to ka mo, nan darou,
Names like “Yamada Taro” or “Tanaka Hajime”
shorui no sa, rei mitai na tokoro ni dete kuru gurai no, yoku aru namae to iu ka.
are the sort you often see as examples on forms— really common names.
So he started introducing himself as “Tanaka Hajime,”
namae ga wakaranai kara ne.
since he doesn’t know his real name.
de, mezameta no ga 7 gatsu no joujun de, mattaku wakaranai.
He woke up in early July, and he has no idea.
why he’s here.
de mo atama ga itai to.
But his head hurts.
de, kaban o motteta.
And he had a bag.
kaban no naka o mitara, megane to ka, nan ka oritatami kasa to ka, nan ka iroiro haitteta n da kedo,.
When he looked inside, there were glasses, a folding umbrella—all sorts of things.
Also cigarettes and a lighter, you know.
osaifu to, mitai na koto wa haitteta n da kedo,
And a wallet—those kinds of things were in there,
osaifu no nakami wa karappo,
but the wallet was empty,
de, mibunshou mo nai. ID nashi tte koto ne.
and there was no ID. No identification at all.
mibunshou mo naku, keitai denwa mo mitsukaranai to.
No ID, and no phone either.
de, naze ka baggu no naka ni 60 man en to naifu ga haitteta n da tte.
But for some reason, there was ¥600,000 and a knife in the bag.
mou jikensei, jiken no nioi punpun da yo ne.
That totally reeks of foul play, right?
If the wallet’s empty, someone must have taken the money, right?
mibunshou mo torareteru desho, tabun.
They must have taken the ID too, probably.
keitai denwa mo torareteru jan.
And the phone as well.
dare ka ga 60 man irete, naifu ga atta tte iu.
Yet there’s ¥600,000 in there, and a knife.
dare ka ga 60 man ireta ka dou ka....
Whether someone put in the ¥600,000 or not…
since he’s self-proclaimed—this self-proclaimed Mr. Tanaka, maybe he himself had it; we don’t know.
shikamo, atama ga itakute me ga sameru tte,
And waking up with a headache.
eiga jan.
that’s straight out of a movie.
dare ka ni gaan tte yararete,
Like someone whacked him—bam—
u, pata....
ugh, collapse…
de, patte me ga sametara atama itai.
then he comes to, and his head hurts.
" de mo, koko wa doko? watashi wa dare? " mitai na ne.
“But where am I? Who am I?” You know?
eiga desu yo ne tte iu joukyou ni narimashita to.
It ended up feeling like a movie scenario.
de, dou shiyou tte natte,
So he’s like, what should I do?
toriaezu 60 man en de tento, kyanpuyou no tento to shokuryouhin o katte,
For the time being, with the ¥600,000 he bought a tent, a camping tent and some food,
and for about 2 months he apparently lived this sort of journey to find his memories, as his way of living.
tento no naka de ne.
In the tent.
de, kioku wa, de mo modoranakute,
But his memories still didn’t come back,
3 shuukan tatte modotte kita kioku tte iu no wa,
and after about 3 weeks, the memories that did return were:
oosaka no guriko no kanban.
the Glico sign in Osaka.
You know that famous billboard in Dotonbori where the runner does the “I did it!” finish-line pose.
are to fujisan gurai na n da tte.
That and Mount Fuji, pretty much.
It’s like he only remembered big tourist spots.
fuji yama to guriko dake omoidashitarashikute.
Seems he remembered just Fuji and Glico.
de, mada jibun no namae mo wakaranakute,
But he still didn’t know his own name,
mou chotto gibu appu, to iu koto de,
so he kind of gave up,
shimane kenkei, keisatsu ni soudan shita to.
and consulted the Shimane Prefectural Police.
de mo shimane kenkei mo yarubeki koto o yatta kedo, mattaku mimoto ga wakaranai.
But even though the police did everything they should, they couldn’t identify him at all.
sono hito ga dare da ka wakaranai to.
They didn’t know who he was.
de, jibun wa ne, yappa oosaka no guriko o omoidashiteru kara, oosaka ni ittarashii no ne.
So, since he remembered the Glico sign in Osaka, it seems he went to Osaka.
de, sono guriko no mae ni itta to.
He went and stood in front of that Glico sign.
He stood there for about 20 minutes, but apparently nothing came back to him.
And, really unfortunately, in Osaka,
" anata chotto ayashii desu ne " mitai na.
someone was like, “You seem a bit suspicious.”
maa, shokushitsu desu ne.
So, a stop-and-question.
shokumu shitsumon tte, chotto ayashii hito ga iru to, keisatsu ga " chotto anata no ID misete kudasai " to ka,
In Japan, if someone seems a bit suspicious, the police do a stop-and-question like, “Could we see your ID?” or
“What are you doing right now?” they ask things like that.
Sometimes they find drugs on someone or discover the person’s up to no good.
sore no shokumu shitsumon, shokushitsu o sarete shimai,
Anyway, he got stopped like that,
ID wa mottenai shi, keitai wa mottenai shi,
but he didn’t have ID, didn’t have a phone,
omake ni naifu o motteta to.
and on top of that, he had a knife.
kaban no naka ni ne.
In his bag.
de, sono mama taiho.
So he was arrested on the spot, arrested for violating the Firearms and Swords Control Law. but it turned out he had no memory
He ends up getting arrested for violating the Firearms and Swords Control Law.
juutou hou ihan tte iu no wa, buki o motte iru koto wa ihan na no de ne.
Violating that law means possessing weapons is illegal.
buki o motte michi o aruite iru koto wa ihan desu.
It’s illegal to walk around with a weapon.
minasan mo ki o tsukete ne.
Everyone, be careful, okay?
naifu motte aruite tari shicha dame yo ne.
Don’t go walking around carrying a knife.
de, taiho sarechatte,
So, he got arrested,
10 kakan, keisatsu no naka ni tsukamatteta n desu kedo,
and was held by the police for 10 days,
dou yara kono hito wa kioku ga nai to.
but apparently he truly has no memories.
nan de naifu o motte iru no ka mo wakaranai.
He doesn’t even know why he had the knife.
And since they still couldn’t tell who he was,
keisatsu wa shakuhou shite,
the police released him
fukushi dantai ni sono hito o okutta to iu.
and referred him to a welfare organization.
sono fukushi dantai no hito ga, ima no jishou tanakasan o otetsudai shite,
People at that organization helped the self-proclaimed Mr. Tanaka,
and now he’s apparently living in Osaka, working part-time at a restaurant.
But since he has no personal information at all, they went on the news saying, “We’re seeking information.”
kono jiken ga akarumi ni natta n desu yo.
That brought the case to light.
ima, 300 ken ijou no jouhou ga kiterurashikute,
Apparently they’ve now received over 300 tips,
dore ga hontou ka mo wakaranai shi,
but they can’t tell which ones are real,
" oya desu " to ka, " jibun wa shinseki desu " tte iu hito mo irurashikute.
and there are people saying, “I’m his parent,” “I’m his relative.”
But even if Mr. Tanaka meets them, he can’t tell whether they’re really his relatives.
da kara tabun, shashin to ka motte tte shoumei suru shika nai yo ne.
So they’ll probably need to bring photos and prove it.
" watashi no musuko na n de, watashi, shashin mottemasu " to ka sa.
Like, “He’s my son—I have photos.”
sou iu no o ima, nan ka katsudou shiteru kedo, mada kono hito wa nanimono na no ka wakattenai to iu joukyourashii desu ne.
They’re working on that now, but apparently they still don’t know who he is.
ayashi sugiru yo ne.
It’s way too suspicious, right?
zettaiya ○ za, mitai na ne.
Feels totally like yakuza or something.
sotchikei no jikensei o watashi wa kanjimasu kedo ne.
I get that kind of criminal vibe from it.
sou omowanai? futsuu no jiken ja naku nai?
Don’t you think so? It doesn’t feel like a normal case.
shikamo " atama ga itai " tte koto wa, nan ka shougeki o uketa, nagurareta, to ka, sou iu koto da yo ne.
And the fact that he says “my head hurts” suggests he suffered some impact, like he was hit, or something like that.
maa futsuu ni dorobou ni atte nagurarete kioku ga nakunatta tte iu no dattara, wakaru.
If it were just a mugging where he got hit and lost his memory, I could understand that.
saifu no nakami torareteru, keitai torareteru to ka.
His wallet emptied, phone taken—sure.
de mo genkin 60 man en wa nokotteru tte iu no ga kowai n da yo ne.
But the scary part is that the ¥600,000 cash was left.
da tte goutou dattara, zettai sore toru jan.
If it were a robbery, they’d definitely take that.
60万。
60 man.
¥600,000.
de, naifu ga haitteru.
And there's a knife in there
naifu o mochiaruiteru hito nante, kono sekai....
Who even walks around carrying a knife in this world…?
In Japan, that’s already a violation of the Firearms and Swords Control Law.
そう。
sou.
Right.
And since Mr. Tanaka wants to meet someone who knows who he is,
kamigata o kaetenai.
he hasn’t changed his hairstyle.
tada, tanakasan, dokutoku sugiru kamigata o shitete,
But actually, Mr. Tanaka has an extremely distinctive hairstyle—
mohikan na no.
it’s a mohawk.
tanakasan no kaminoke.
His hair.
mohikan tte, ano, etto, nante iu no, saido wa, migi to hidari no saido wa zenbu soriagetete,
A mohawk is, um, how should I put it, both the right and left sides are completely shaved,
nan ka, panku bando ni i sou na, wan rain no sen dake atama no ue ni pii tte haitteru you na kaminoke ne.
and there’s just a single strip of hair running straight along the top, like someone from a punk band.
mohikan.
A mohawk.
iyaa, tokuchou arisugi daro, mitai na ne.
I mean, that’s way too distinctive, right?
futsuu no seikatsu shiteru hito, anmari mohikan inai kara,
You don’t really see many people living ordinary lives with mohawks,
so I can’t help thinking Mr. Tanaka might’ve been a bit of an odd person.
minasan dou omoimasu ka?
What do you all think?
kono jiken.
About this case.
mochiron ne, kono tanakasan wa " zettai uso tsuiteru " to ka " zettai kioku naku shitenai desho " to ka
Of course there are plenty of people saying, “He’s definitely lying,” or “No way he actually lost his memory,”
or “He’s just acting.”
maa, de mo, watashiteki ni, kioku soushitsu no engi suru meritto, naku nai? to omou n da kedo.
But to me, what’s the benefit of faking amnesia?
dou na n darou to omou.
That’s what I wonder.
watashi no kojinteki na kenkai wa,
My personal view is—
tabun, kekkou yabai kei no hito ni okane o karite,
maybe he borrowed money from some pretty dangerous people,
de, kaesenai mitai na kanji ni natchatte,
couldn’t pay it back,
de, tabun, nan ka atama o bon tte nagurarete,
then got whacked on the head—bam—
sono mama kioku naku natchatte, suterareta to ka ne.
lost his memory and got dumped somewhere, you know?
yama no naka ni.
In the mountains.
But even then, the ¥600,000 left behind is strange—like, “Here, live off this.”
de, subete no zaisan, torareteru to ka ne.
And all his other assets were taken.
60 man shika nokottenai mitai na. gyaku ni.
So he only had ¥600,000 left, like the opposite way around.
mitai na koto ka na to.
Something like that, maybe.
maa, jikensei o kanjimasu yo ne.
I mean, it really feels like there’s some criminal element.
I actually shared this news story in a lesson,
watashi no ressun no seitosan wa,
and one of my students said,
" to iu.
“Wouldn’t he actually be happier if his memories don’t come back?”
" kioku ga modotta toki no hou ga taihen na n ja nai? kono joukyou tte "
“As in, wouldn’t it be harder if they do come back, given this situation?”
tashika ni ne.
True, yeah.
mae no seikatsu, shiranai hou ga ii ka mo shirenai to wa omottari mo suru kedo, tte iu.
Maybe it’s better not to know your previous life but still,
de mo, moyamoya suru yo ne.
it leaves you unsettled, right?
Not knowing who you are, who you were, not even your name.
de, ima, 1 tsu wakatta koto ga atte,
And now there’s one thing we’ve learned
sono jouhou no 1 tsu de, kamakura no apareru shoppu no burogu kara,
one of the tips came from a fashion shop’s blog in Kamakura,
tanakasan ni sokkuri na hito no shashin ga mitsukatta to.
where they found a photo of someone who looks just like Mr. Tanaka.
sore ga, kekkou mae no kotorashii n da kedo,
Apparently it’s from quite a while ago (the photo itself is old),
kanagawa ken no kamakura no shopputen'in datta n ja nai ka tte.
and people think he might have been a shop clerk in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture.
sono shashin mitara ne, tanakasan sokkuri na no.
When you look at the photo, he looks exactly like him—
hige to ka, mohikan no atama to ka, kao no katachi to ka, sono manma na no ne.
the beard, the mohawk, the shape of his face—just the same.
tabun, douitsu jinbutsu da to omou.
I’m pretty sure it’s the same person.
So the information that he worked as a shop clerk in Kamakura seems likely to be true.
minasan dou omoimasu ka?
What do you all think?
Mystery-type cases like this are interesting, aren’t they?
minasan no kuni de mo, kou iu koto aru n desu ka ne.
Do things like this happen in your countries too—
someone shows up with amnesia and nobody knows who they are?
kono jishou tanaka hajimesan no atarashii jouhou ga haittara, minasan ni mata shea shitai na to omoimasu.
If there’s any new information about this self-proclaimed Mr. Tanaka Hajime, I’d like to share it with you again.
