minasan.
Everyone.
I haven’t told these to anyone either—these three.

First reveal.
shoshutsu shi hazukashii hanashi.
First-time embarrassing stories.
" ii kara hayaku hanase " tte hanashi desu ne. suimasen.
You’re like, “Just get on with it,” right? Sorry.
hai, ee, mazu ne,
Okay, first,
yappari 3 i, dai 3 i kara ikimasu.
we’ll start from number three.
are wa, are wa koukousei no toki deshita.
That was when I was in high school.
koukousei no juken no hi, daigaku juken no hi deshita ne.
It was the day of the university entrance exam when I was a high schooler.
toaru ne, daigaku ni ne, shiken o uke ni itta n desu yo.
I went to take a test at a certain university.
2 gatsu no nan nichi ka, samui jiki datta to omoimasu.
It was some day in February; I think it was a cold time.
nihon no baai ne, uketai daigaku ni chokusetsu itte tesuto o ukete,
In Japan, you go directly to the university you want to apply to and take the test,
and then it’s pass or fail.
maa, gakkou ni yotte chigau n desu kedo,
Well, it depends on the school,
watashi wa sou iu taipu datta n desu kedo.
but that’s how it was for me.
sono gakkou wa suberidome no daigaku datta n desu yo.
That school was a backup university.
suberidome tte iu no wa, anoo, daiichi shibou ja nakute,
“Backup” means, uh, not your first choice,
" ochitara koko ni ikou " mitai na ne.
like, “If I fail, I’ll go here.”
chotto jibun no reberu yori kantan na daigaku o ukeru n desu kedo,
You apply to a university a bit easier than your level,
sou iu tokoro datta no ne.
and it was that kind of place.
da kara kimochiteki ni wa " kono daigaku ni wa mou ni do to konee zo! " mitai na ne.
So mindset-wise I was like, “I’m never coming back to this university again!”You know?
shiken wa ukeru kedo nyuugaku wa sen zo.
I’ll take the test but I’m not enrolling.
ni do to konee zo, mitai na kanji na n desu yo.
Like, “I’m never coming back here.”
tesuto uketete,
So I was taking the test,
and it felt kind of easy, like “this is a piece of cake.”
chotto choushi notteta.
I was getting a bit cocky.
" yoyuu da shi " mitai na kanji de.
Like, “I’ve got this.”
ohiru no jikan ni narimashita to. ne?
Then lunchtime came, right?
gozen gogo de aru n de,
Since there are morning and afternoon sessions,
ohiru no jikan ni natta toki ni,
at lunchtime,
everyone eats in the exam hall.
de mo yappari kinchou shiteru hito mo takusan iru wake jan.
But of course lots of people are nervous.
Of course — it’s an exam.
daiji na hi da shi.
It’s an important day.
de, tomodachi mo mochiron inakute.
And of course I didn’t have any friends there.
So everyone was eating in silence.
de, maa tsugi no jugyou no... jugyou ja nee,
And then for the next class— no, not class,
tsugi no tesuto no tame ni yoshuu shiteru hito to ka,
people were prepping for the next test,
like looking at vocab books,
minna gohan taberu, mitai de.
while eating.
watashi wa konbini de katta onigiri to, nan ka... nan ka to,
I had an onigiri from the convenience store and, uh… something else,
ato yasai juusu o katta n desu yo.
and I’d bought vegetable juice.
kono gurai no chitchai pakku no yasai juusu.
A little pack about this size.
ninjin ga ippai haitteru orenji iro no, yoku aru nihon de yoku utteru ninjinshoku no orenji no yasai juusu o katteta n desu ne.
The orange one with lots of carrot in it — the common carrot-colored orange veggie juice you see in Japan.
watashi kore sugoi suki de, nondeta n desu kedo,
I really like it, so I was drinking that,
sono toki, watashi, fuyu datta n de,
and since it was winter,
you usually go to exams in your school uniform, right?
minna.
Everyone does.
koukou no toki no seifuku de,
So in my high school uniform,
shiroi seetaa o kiteta n desu yo ne. sono toki.
I was wearing a white sweater then.
mou souzou dekiteru hito iru ka mo shirenai desu kedo.
Some of you may already see where this is going.
de, kou tabetete.
So I’m eating,
de, saigo, yasai juusu nomou to omotte,
and at the end I went to drink the veggie juice,
pii tte nondeta no. sutoroo de.
sipping it through a straw.
pyuu tte.
Like “slurp.”
so shitara, nan ka shiranai kedo,
Then for some reason,
ano yasai juusu no pakku ne,
you know the veggie juice carton,
kami pakku o gyu tte, watashi, gyu tte shichatta no.
I squeezed the paper carton. Like, squeezed it.
so shitara, sutoroo kara yasai juusu ga baatte dechatte.
And the juice sprayed out of the straw.
seetaa.
Onto my sweater.
masshiro no.
Pure white.
orenji iro no juusu ga.
With orange juice.
ね?
ne?
Right?
a, yatchimatta, to omotte.
I was like, “Ah, I messed up.”
minna chuumoku suru yo ne.
Of course everyone looks.
yappari tonari no hito to ka " e, nan ka ano hito ima, daijoubu? " mitai na.
Like the person next to me was probably thinking, “Uh, is she okay?”Like that.
sugoi oto shita kedo. bisho tte.
It made a big sound — splat.
batte shiroi no ni tsuichatte.
It splashed right onto the white.
" uwa, hazu ー " tte natte.
I was like, “Ugh, so embarrassing.”
" e, dou shiyou " tte natchatte.
“Uh, what do I do?”
Since it was a white sweater, I wiped it,
nan ka jakkan iro ga nokotchattete.
but the color kinda stayed.
kekkou na ryou dechatta no ne.
Quite a lot came out.
mada nomi hajime datta kara,
I’d only just started drinking it,
bicho tte koboshichatte.
so I spilled a big splat.
de, mawari no hito mo, nan ka zenzen tasukete wa kurenai wake yo.
And people around me didn’t help at all.
Everyone’s got their own stuff to worry about.
de, nan ka seetaa kou yatte tisshu de,
So I dabbed my sweater with tissues like this,
pyu pyu pyu tte yatta n da kedo,
went “dab-dab-dab,”
orenji iro no shimi o tsuketa manma shiken o tsuzukeru to iu.
but I continued the test with an orange stain.
soshite sono mama kaeru to iu ne.
And then went home like that.
are wa hazukashikatta na.
That was embarrassing.
shizuka na shiken kaijou datta shi ne.
It was a quiet exam hall, too.
are 100 nin ijou ita to omou n da yo ne.
I think there were over 100 people.
wachawacha shichatta ne. un.
It turned into a little commotion, yeah.
Why did I— milk carton… no, not milk.
ano yasai juusu no pakku o tsuyoku oshita no ka.
Why did I press the veggie juice carton so hard?
kodomo ga yaru koto, jan. sutoroo kara pichotte dasu tte ne.
That’s like what kids do—making it squirt out of the straw.
chikara kagen, baka na no? tte iu ne.
Like, what was I thinking with the pressure?
kore ne, 3 banme.
That’s number three.
tsugi, dai 2 i. hazukashikatta hanashi.
Next, number two—an embarrassing story.
kore wa ne, omoshiro sugite wasurerarenai tte iu ne.
This one’s so funny I can’t forget it.
omoshiro sugite, tte iu ka, nan ka
Or rather, so funny that
waratchai sou ni natte. jibun ga baka sugite.
I almost laughed—at how dumb I was.
ano, maa watashi yoku kafe iku n desu yo.
So, I go to cafes a lot.
nihon de ne.
In Japan.
de, ano toki wa ne, ie no... maaka no tte iu ka, moyori no eki no chikaku no kafe ni itte,
And that time, near my—well, near my nearest station, I went to a cafe,
kekkou, watashi no moyori no eki tte kekkou hito ga iru ookii eki de,
and my nearest station is a big one with a lot of people,
bijinesuman to ka gakusei to ka, ironna hito ga ippai iru n desu yo ne.
businesspeople, students,all kinds of people.
sono naka ni bou midoriiro no ne, kafe ga ne,
Among them there’s that certain green cafe,
the one called S〇〇bucks—I used to go there a lot.
ikitsuke datta no ne.
It was my regular spot.
de, itsu mo konden no yo. soko.
And it’s always crowded there.
de, terasu ga atte, 1 kai ga atte, 2 kai ga aru no.
There’s a terrace, a first floor, and a second floor.
You can see people on the second floor from outside too.
The terrace was full too,
sugoi konderu na to omotteta no ne.
and I was thinking, “Wow, it’s packed.”
reji mo naranderu no.
There was a line at the register too.
So I’m just walking, listening to music,
sutaba ni ikou... sutaba tte itchatta ne. sumimasen.
heading to Starb— oh, I said Starbucks, sorry.
bou midoriiro no kafe ni ikou tte aruitetara sa,
I was walking to that certain green cafe,
tobira ga atte, toumei no jidou tobira datta no ne.
and there was a door—a transparent automatic door.
But it was, like, you had to press—one of those automatic doors you have to push open yourself,
nan kai mo soko ni itten no ni,
even though I’d gone there many times,
naze ka watashi, osu botan o oshitenakute.
for some reason I didn’t press the button.
I guess I was spacing out.
annojou, tobira ni omoikkiri atama gatsun tte butsukete.
As you might expect, I slammed my head into the door.
toumei no jidou tobira no tokoro ni baan tte.
Like, wham, into the clear automatic door.
So hard it felt like the glass might’ve cracked,I banged my head really hard.
chouitakute. de, sugoi oto ga shita no yo.
It hurt so much. And it made a huge sound.
hazukashii jan.
Embarrassing, right?
minna miru jan. terasu no hito mo tsuukounin no hito mo, naka ni iru ten'insan mo okyakusan mo, minna watashi no koto patte mite.
Everyone looks. The terrace people, passersby, the staff inside, the customers—everyone looked at me.
And if it had just been a bang,
that door was like, kind of soft plastic?not exactly,
nan ka yawarakai sozai datta no ne.
but some soft material.
So when I hit it with a bang,
the door kind of bounced back,
bainbainbainbainbaiin! tte suggoi ookii oto ga natchatte.
going “boing, boing, boing, boing, boiiing!”it made a really loud noise.
ban! bainbainbainbainbaiin! tte natte.
Like “bang! boing, boing, boing, boing, boiiing!”
hazukashii yo ne. sugoi oto ookikute.
So embarrassing. The sound was really loud.
sugoi ita sou na oto shitete.
It sounded super painful too.
de, nan ka ten'insan mo " daijoubu desu ka? " mitai na.
And the staff were like, “Are you okay?”
hazukashii yo ne.
Embarrassing, right?
Like, “Wow, people really do walk into clear doors.”
de, " a, itai! yatchimatta " to ii nagara,
And I’m like, “Ow! I messed up,”
de mo, kore de watashi wa nan ka " hazukashii... " mitai na kakkou suru no wa, yappa hazukashii kara,
but acting all “I’m embarrassed…”would itself be embarrassing, so
I was like, “Uh, I’m totally fine.”
chotto atama utchatta ka na, gurai.
Like, “Maybe I bumped my head a bit.”
kyuu ni kakko tsuke hajimete.
Suddenly putting on a cool act.
" daijoubu da shi " mitai na kanji de,
Like, “I’m fine,”
pitte tobira no jidou doa akeru botan o pitte oshite,
I pressed the button to open the door,
futsuu ni retsu ni narande,
lined up as usual,
fiddled with my phone like, “Yeah, I’m fine.”
de mo keitai miteru kedo,
But even though I was looking at my phone,
keitai, nan o miteta ka, zenzen atama ni haittenai no. hazukashi sugite.
nothing was actually sinking in. I was way too embarrassed.
de, ten'in no hito ni
And to the staff member
" tooru saizu no hotto rate, ootsu miruku henkou de onegai shimasu " mitai na kanji desu ne.
I was like, “A tall hot latte with oat milk, please.”
I remember I placed my order with a super smug face.
are mo hazukashikatta ne.
That was embarrassing too.
ironna hito ga miteta no o kanjita.
I could feel lots of people looking at me.
sore ga 2 tsume.
That’s number two.
ichiban yabai hanashi.
The most outrageous story.
yabai hanashi tte iu ka,
Well, not “outrageous,” exactly,
but so embarrassing I could hardly tell anyone.
daigaku ni iku toki ni.
When I was going to university.
daigaku no toki ni ichigen tte,
In college, first period
daitai 8 ji 45 fun to ka ni hajimaru no ne.
usually started around 8:45.
ichigen, ichiban saisho no jugyou, ichigen tte iu n da kedo.
First period—the very first class—we call it “ichigen.”
ichigen wa zettai ni okurecha ikenai jugyou datta no.
And that first period class was one you absolutely couldn’t be late for.
okuretara tan'i torenai, mitai na.
If you were late, you couldn’t get credit, that kind of thing.
kibishii yatsu datta no ne.
It was a strict one.
daigaku 1 nensei no toki.
When I was a freshman.
ima de mo oboeteru yo.
I still remember it.
ano shibuya no norikae de shibuya made itte,
I went to Shibuya for a transfer,
shibuya no norikae de moudasshu de " yabai, okureru! " mitai na.
and at the transfer I sprinted like, “Crap, I’m gonna be late!”
" kono tsugi no densha nogashitara okureru! " mitai na kanji datta no.
It was like, “If I miss the next train, I’m late!”
paatte asa hashitte.
I dashed through the morning.

There were tons of people. It’s Shibuya.
buwaa tte itte, norikae no tokoro ni mo ne, itte.
I rushed over to the transfer area too.
so shitara densha ga ita no.
And the train was there.
" a, densha touchaku shiteru! " tte natte, norou to omottara,
I was like, “Oh, the train’s here!” and went to get on,
watashi no me no mae de tobira ga paan tte shimari kaketa no ne.
when the doors started to slam shut right in front of me.
de, uchi no jimoto no densha dattara,
Back on my local line,
chotto te o hasan dari to ka, mono ga hasamu to,
if a hand or something gets caught,
sugu ni paan tte hiraku no.
they pop right back open.

So I instantly
jibun no te o paatte doa no aida ni patte hasan da n da kedo,
stuck my hand between the doors,
sono densha ne, hirakanakatta no.
but that train didn’t open.
sono mama shimari kakeru.
It just kept closing.

Basically about to clamp down on my hand.
de, watashi nan o kangaete... mou aseri sugite, tabun shikou kairo mawattenakatta to omou.
And I don’t know what I was thinking— I was so panicked,my brain probably wasn’t working.
So I grabbed the doors with both hands,
isshun ake kaketa.
and for a second, I almost pried them open.
ima kangaete mo hazukashii.
Even now, it’s embarrassing to think about.
mou chikoku shitaku nai shi,
I really didn’t want to be late,
" nan ka ake yo! " mitai na.
so I was like, “Just open already!”
" iya na n de tobira hirakanai no? " mitai na.
“Why won’t the door open?”
" hirake yo! " mitai na.
“Open up!”
iya meiwaku da yo.
But no—that’s a nuisance.

Looking back now.

But this was the one first-period class I just couldn’t be late for, so

tobira o isshun kojiake sou ni natta n da kedo,
almost forced the doors open for a second,
tobira no chikara no hou ga tsuyokute.
but the doors were stronger.

And they slammed shut.
