hai, ee,
Alright, um,
sou, kyou wa ne, sotsugyou no hanashi o shitai to omou n desu kedo,
so today, I want to talk about graduation,
chotto sono mae ni, chotto geemu no hanashi ii desu ka?
but before that, can I talk about a game for a bit?
pokemon na n da kedo.
It’s about Pokémon.
saikin hatsubai shita shinsaku de wa nakute,
Not the newest release,
minna shinsaku o asonderu to omou n desu kedo,
I think everyone is playing the new one,
watashi wa i kute, faia reddo desu ne.
but I’m not—I’m playing FireRed.
mukashi, geemu booi adobansu de hatsubai sareta reddo no,
It’s an upgraded version of Red,
chotto gureedo appu ban no
which was originally released on the Game Boy Advance,
faia reddo ga Switch ni deta n desu yo.
and FireRed has now come out on the Switch.
saikin. pokemon 30 shuunen kinen datta to omou n da kedo,
Recently. I think it was for Pokémon’s 30th anniversary,
and now you can play it on the Switch,
2,000 en gurai datta ka na.
it was about 2,000 yen, I think.
It was cheap, so I thought, “Let’s give it a try,”
2, 3 ka mae ni hajimeta n desu yo.
and I started playing it 2 or 3 days ago.
metcha hamatchatte. yappa tanoshii wa.
I got completely hooked. It’s really fun.
mukashi no pokemon, maji tanoshii ne tte iu gurai tanoshikute,
Old Pokémon is seriously so fun,
reberu age to ka sa, kekkou isshou kenmei yaranai to ikenai jan. kore kore kore kore!
you really have to grind levels a lot, right? This is it, this is it!
This is it! That’s how I’m playing it.
raibaru mo sa, saikin no pokemon wa,
And the rival too—in recent Pokémon,
saikin no pokemon de ne, omoshiromi ga ippai aru to omou n da kedo,
I think recent Pokémon has a lot of fun elements,
kojinteki ni chotto reberu ga yasashi sugiru jan.
but personally, it feels a bit too easy.
saikin no pokemon tte.
Modern Pokémon, I mean.
tabun, pokemon o atsumeru koto no hou ga
I think collecting Pokémon has become
juuyou ni natte kite iru no ka na to omou n da kedo,
the more important aspect now,
mukashi tte yappa batoru jan.
but back then, it was all about battles.
mou bachibachi no batoru jan.
Like serious, intense battles.
de, nan ka raibaru ga sugoi mukatsuku no yo.
And the rival is super annoying.
mukashi no,
In the old games—
mukashi no pokemon tte.
old Pokémon—
" ou, haruka. omae mada pokemon 30 hiki shika inee no? "
he’d say things like,“Hey, Haruka. You only have 30 Pokémon?”
" ore mou 40 hiki tsukamaeta shi. " mitai na.
“I’ve already caught 40.”
" mitai na.
“Haha.”
" hayaku ore ni oitsukeyo naa. " mitai na.
“Hurry up and catch up to me.”
ha? nan da koitsu.
What? Who is this guy?
ha? nan da koitsu, mitai na.
What? Seriously, who is this guy?
nan ka nama iki na no yo, raibaru ga.
He’s so cocky.
" omae wa seizei ganbare yo ne. " mitai na.
“Just do your best, okay?”
" ore wa saki ni iku kedo na. " mitai na. wa?
“I’m going ahead.”
nan da koitsu, mitai na.
Who is this guy?
da kara koso omoshiroi no yo.
But that’s exactly what makes it fun.
raibaru no seikaku no warusa ga. da kara koso ii no yo.
The rival’s bad personality—that’s what makes it good.
saikin no sa, pokemon no raibaru tte sa,
But in recent Pokémon,
" haruka, issho ni ganbarou. " mitai na.
the rival is like,“Haruka, let’s do our best together.”
makete mo sa, mukashi no raibaru da to " chi. " mitai na.
Even if they lose, old rivals would go, “Tch.”
“This sucks.”
saikin no raibaru da to,
But recent rivals are like,
" haruka, tsuyoi naa! sasuga da ze. " mitai na.
“Haruka, you’re strong! That’s awesome.”
They’re nice, but I don’t really want kindness from a rival.
watashi wa mukashi no raibaru no,
I prefer the old rivals,
ano nama iki de " koitsu mukatsuku " gurai no,
that cocky attitude that makes you think,
" zettai katsu!
“I’m definitely going to beat you!”
hai, maamaa, sou.
Yeah, so anyway.
ima wa denki no bosu, kuchibashiti no machisu o taoshite,
Right now, I beat Lt. Surge in Vermilion City,
ima, shion taun e mukatte orimasu.
and I’m heading to Lavender Town.
shion taun wa goosuto biru ga aru tokoro.
Lavender Town is where the ghost tower is.
chotto kowai tokoro desu keredo mo.
It’s a bit scary.
watashi no ima no pokemon no menbaa wa,
My current Pokémon team is:
mein wa hito kage.
My main is Charmander.
Charmander is a fire-type Pokémon with a flame on its tail,
it evolved into Charmeleon,
riza ー don ga yappa suki da kara,
but I like Charizard,
riza ー don o sodatetai kara,
so I want to raise Charizard,
that’s why I chose a fire-type Pokémon.
ato, kusai hana.
Also, Gloom.
kusai hana wa, namae no toori, kusai hana.
Gloom, as the name suggests, is a stinky flower.
kusai hana, sodateru hito iru n da tte
You might be thinking, “Wait, people actually raise Gloom?”
omotta hito iru ka mo shirenai kedo,
Some of you might be thinking that,
but when Gloom evolves, it becomes Vileplume,
rafureshia kara kirei hana ni narimasu kara.
and from Vileplume it becomes Bellossom.
and I really like those, so I’m raising it.
ato wa yun geraa.
Also Kadabra.
yun geraa wa, supuun motteru esupaakei no pokemon desu ne.
Kadabra is a psychic-type Pokémon that holds a spoon.
It kind of looks like it eats curry.
Like, “This guy definitely eats curry.”
と、
to,
And,
ato pikachuu to, ato gyara dosu.
Pikachu and Gyarados.
sou, gyara dosu ga imasu.
Yeah, I have Gyarados.
gyara dosu wa doragon taipu no pokemon de,
Gyarados is a dragon-type Pokémon,
ano mizuiro no sa, nan ka kuchi ga waa tte hiraite iru pokemon.
that light blue one with its mouth wide open.
shinka mae wa, tada no sakana mitai na.
Before evolving, it’s just like a fish.
shinka mae wa tada no sakana de,
Before evolution, it’s just a fish,
shinka shitara metcha tsuyoi doragon ni naru, ano gyara dosu ne.
but after evolving, it becomes a super strong dragon.
shingapooru no maaraionnami ni
Its mouth is as wide open as Singapore’s Merlion,
and it’s really strong.
nan ka soitsu tsuyoi no yo.
It looks strong too—really scary—like the strongest Pokémon,
mita me mo tsuyoi shi, metcha kowai shi, saikyou pokemon na n da kedo,
but since it just evolved, it can’t really do anything yet.
ima no tokoro shinka shita bakkari da kara, nanni mo dekinai no ne.
It’s useless for now.
yaku ni tatanai.
Even though it looks so scary.
mita me anna ni kowai no ni, mitai na.
All it has is tackle,
taiatari shika nai, mitai na. taiatari to,
and something like jumping around—“splash splash.”
nan ka haneru mitai na. " pichipichi pichipichi. "
“Splash splash splash.”
" shikashi nan mo okoranakatta. " mitai na.
“But nothing happened.”
nan kore, mitai na.
What is this?
It’s like a delinquent—
mita me wa tsuyoi kedo nakami ga yowai,
looks strong but weak on the inside,
dasai yankii mitai na kanji desu.
like a lame delinquent.
ima no joutai wa ne.
That’s how it is right now.
kore kara ne, dondon sodatete ikou to omoimasu.
I’m going to keep training it from here.
onaji you ni pokemon shiteru hito itara, zehi oshiete kudasai ne.
If anyone else is playing Pokémon, let me know.
osusume. Switch de dekimasu kara.
I recommend it—you can play it on Switch.
to iu koto de, geemu no hanashi wa oitoite,
So anyway, putting the game talk aside,
sotsugyou no hanashi o shitai to omoimasu.
I want to talk about graduation.
ima wa ne, mou 3 gatsu 24 ka de, kyou wa.
Right now, it’s March 24th.
mou sotsugyou shiizun na n desu yo.
It’s graduation season.
In Japan, March is for graduation and April is for entering school,
da kara wakare no 3 tsuki, deai no 4 gatsu tte iwaremasu ne.
so people say March is for farewells, April is for new meetings.
hontou ni ne, nan ka machi o mite iru to,
When you look around the city,
" kono hito, tabun kyou sotsugyou shiki darou na "
you can often see people who make you think,
tte iu mita me no hito to ka kekkou imasu ne.
“They probably have their graduation today.”
ohana motte tari to ka,
People holding flowers,
or people with flowers on their uniforms—those are graduates.
ato wa daininzuu de sugoi nomikai ga ooi desu.
Also, there are lots of big drinking parties.
machi o aruiteru to, mou gakusei no yopparai ga ippai ite,
When you walk around, there are tons of drunk students,
" sotsugyou na n darou na. " to ka.
and you think, “They must be graduating.”
ato wa daigaku no joshi, daigakusei dake da to omou n desu kedo,
Also, for university women—well, I think it’s mostly university students—
sotsugyou shiki ni hakama o kiru n desu yo.
they wear hakama at their graduation ceremonies.
hakama tte iu no wa kimono ni niteru n desu kedo, mata chotto i kute,
Hakama are similar to kimono, but a bit different,
kirei na dentouteki na ishou ga aru n desu kedo,
they’re a beautiful traditional outfit,
sono hakama o kite iru joshi daigakusei mo kekkou ite,
and you’ll see quite a lot of female university students wearing them.
and it makes you feel like, “Nice, it’s graduation season.”
kyou wa nihon no sotsugyou shiki, sotsugyoushiki nan suru no to ka,
Today, I want to talk about Japanese graduation ceremonies—what people do,
donna kanji? fun'iki wa? tte iu koto o hanashitai to omoimasu.
what they’re like, and what the atmosphere is like.
minasan no kuni to wari to chigau tokoro ga aru to omoimasu ne.
I think there are quite a few differences compared to your countries.
mazu desu ne, nihon no sotsugyou shiki tte iu no wa,
First of all, graduation ceremonies in Japan
subete no gakkou de yaru n desu kedo,
are held at all schools,
yappa shouchuukoudai ga yappa omoide ga bukai desu yo ne.
but elementary, junior high, high school, and university graduations tend to be the most memorable.
But what you do is basically the same across all of them.
daigaku wa chotto mou chotto jiyuusa ga aru n da kedo,
University is a bit more relaxed,
yappa shouchuukou wa sotsugyou shiki to iu seremonii.
but in elementary, junior high, and high school, it’s a formal ceremony.
sono shikiten tte iu no ga yappari shikkari shite iru no de,
Since it’s a proper ceremony,
sono shikiten no junbi ga 1 kagetsu mae gurai kara hajimarimasu.
preparations start about a month in advance.
nan o junbi suru ka to iu to, rei no renshuu.
What do you prepare? Practicing bows.
tatoeba, " kiritsu! " tatsu.
For example, “Stand up!” You stand.
ki o tsuke. " rei! " de atama o sageru.
“Attention.” “Bow!” You lower your head.
" chakuseki! "
“Sit down!”
chakuseki wa suwarette koto ne.
“Sit down” means to sit.
" chakuseki! "
“Sit down!”
kore o minna onaji taimingu de yaru renshuu o suru no.
Everyone practices doing this at the same timing.
" kiritsu! " " ki o tsuke! "
“Stand up!” “Attention!”
It feels a bit like the military, but it’s very Japanese.
nihon no shikiten na n de,
especially for the graduates, underclassmen attend,
zaikousei tte iu no wa kouhaitachi desu ne. nokoru hitotachi.
and underclassmen are the younger students who remain.
zaikousei mo sanka suru kara,
Since the current students also attend,
sotsugyousei to shite chotto kakko ii tokoro
as graduating students, you kind of feel like
you have to show a cool side of yourselves,
shikkari to renshuu shimasu.
so you practice very thoroughly.
sotsugyou shousho o morau renshuu mo shimasu.
You also practice how to receive your diploma.
migite kara hidarite o dashite, ippo sagatte, rei.
You extend your right hand, then your left hand, take a step back, and bow.
kono toki, ude o sagenai, mitai na.
At that time, you’re told not to lower your arms.
sensei ni " ude o sagenai! " " hai! "
The teacher says, “Don’t lower your arms!” “Yes!”
hidarite ni sotsugyou shousho o motte aruite,
Then you walk while holding your diploma in your left hand,
minna ni rei, sensei ni rei, hogosha ni rei.
bowing to everyone, bowing to the teachers, and bowing to the parents.
ochichisan ohahasan mo ne, hogosha,
Because, you know, the parents come too—
ochichisan ohahasan mo kuru no de ne.
moms and dads come as guardians.
sono renshuu to, ato wa uta desu ne.
So there’s that practice, and then singing too.
zettai ni uta o utaimasu.
We definitely sing.
nihon no gakkou wa, yatara to uta o utau n desu yo.
Japanese schools sing all the time.
ironna tokoro de.
In all kinds of situations.
gasshou konkuuru ga attari, ongakusai ga attari,
There are choir competitions and music festivals,
nyuugaku shiki, sotsugyou shiki, ironna tokoro de uta o utau n desu kedo,
and people sing at entrance ceremonies, graduation ceremonies, and many other occasions,
but graduation is the very last one for the graduates,
mou ne, kiai o irete uta no renshuu o shimasu.
so they really put a lot of effort into practicing the songs.
minasan ga kiita koto aru uta mo ippai aru to omou n desu yo.
I think there are many songs you’ve probably heard before,
anime to ka dorama to ka eiga to ka de kiita yo, to ka,
like in anime, dramas, or movies,
and many of them are just well-known songs.
sotsugyou songu tte.
Graduation songs, I mean.
nihon ni wa, sotsugyou songu, wakare no songu,
In Japan, there are tons of graduation songs, farewell songs,
sakura songu ga monosugoi ippai aru n desu yo.
and cherry blossom songs.
ippai aru tte koto wa,
The fact that there are so many
itsu mo to chigau no ka tte iu no ga wakaru to omou n desu kedo.
and how different it feels from normal times.
sotsugyou shiki de yoku utau teiban kyoku wa ikutsu ka atte,
There are a few classic songs that are often sung at graduation ceremonies,
1 tsume wa, ikimonogakari no " YELL ".
and one of them is “YELL” by Ikimonogakari.
ikimonogakari, suki na hito iru yo ne.
There are definitely people who like Ikimonogakari.
NARUTO no " Bluebird " to ka ne, suki desu tte hito iru kedo,
Like people who say they love “Bluebird” from NARUTO,
" YELL " tte iu kyoku ga arimashite.
but there’s also a song called “YELL.”
to ka, ato, remioromen no " 3 gatsu 9 ka " tte iu kyoku.
Another one is “March 9th” by Remioromen.
kore mou, omise ni hairu to nagareteru mon, ima. " 3 gatsu 9 ka " ga.
That song is literally playing in stores right now. “March 9th.”
to ka mo aru shi, matsutouya yumisan no " sotsugyou shashin ".
There’s also “Graduation Photograph” by Yumi Matsutoya.
chotto furui kyoku na n desu kedo, watashi kore metcha suki desu.

I think it’s fine if I say his name—
furu ya sensei tte iu no ga tannin no sensei datta no.
our homeroom teacher was Furuya-sensei.
furu tii tte yondete.
And we called him “Fru-Tea.”

Fru-Tea, Fru-Tea.
